protection, to gather tripes together (make enemies be friends), give examples of certain issues (such as yes you can marry a widow, divorce, relative....etc) , the youngest was Ayisha. who is the 1st scholar woman in Islam. after Muhammad death, she carried his message to the next generation, she recorded 25% of his words and teaching. Muhammad was a shy man, he couldn't answer all the questions regarding women, so he used to give it to Ayisha.
there are also other reasons such as to take care of him, he married very old women. also to take care of a woman whos her husband died during war.

because there was constant wars and many Muslims were dying. many women became widow. and who's better than the Prophet (pbuh) to take care of the widows, until the verse was revealed that allowed men to have up to 4 women only.
