The pop up banners are trying to install spy ware.

If the pop up box is grey then it is a program within windows called messenger (not I.M0 it is to do with networks.

Go to admin tools select services and double click on Messenger. for start up type select Disabled.

If you want to install a optimisation program then i recommend Tweak XP. It is very powerful and very easy to use. Download the trial version, you get 30 uses and you will probably only need to use it half a dozen times or so.

Here is the link.

Always ignore the pop-up ads telling you to download Anti Viruses and stuff, (such as Windows Anti-Virus 2006 and that Drive Cleaner). They're all viruses. Other types of ads (most commonly advertising "free ringtones") usually contains malicious files. You can get rid of these by using Spybot Search and Destroy, it's all free. Also, scan your computer for viruses often. Most of the time, it's better off to buy Anti-Viruses instores, not download them (Search and Destroy is an exception hehe.)

Hey,

Yeah DON'T do it. It is a popup that is trying to lure you in to something you don't need or want like a purchase or adware programs. By the way, sounds like you have adware programs installed on your computer.

Try This

click the START button and click on RUN
Type in services.msc

Scroll down the list till you see one called Messenger and click once on it.

Click on Action in the upper left corner and select Properties

in the dropdown box called "Startup Type", select DISABLE
click ok to close.
reboot your machine.

This Should stop Allot of Ad pop-ups that look like system messages.

Also download a spyware/adware program
I recommend http://lavasoft.com

update your antivirus definitions
