You should only take protein supplements if you do enough weight and fitness training to actually *require* extra protein, otherwise you will find yourself quickly gaining weight. You can take it with milk or water, whatever you prefer. Although I find water is pretty gross with it. I actually really liked the chocolate one with milk, it tasted very good.

And yes, it can increase your muscle size, IF you do the required weight training. Muscle tissues are made out of protein, and when you train with weights they rebuild themselves in order to adapt to the stress you've put on them. If you don't have enough protein, they won't rebuild, so depending on how much they need to rebuild, supplying yourself with the necessary protein can help them increase their mass ... yes.

Yes, whey protein can help you gain weight / muscle. Naturally, you still have to make your body grow muscles by actually working out.

Remember that Whey protein is nothing more than a side-effect of cheese / milk processing. It's not a steroid, it's not a magical powder, and it won't build you into a strong man unless your diet and exercise routines are sound.

I usually use whey protein immediately after working out or sometimes as a mini-meal replacement where I feel I could use another 20 grams of protein. I usually mix mine with milk, as water is too bland.

I like the Body Fortress brand of Whey Protein. It's cheap, mixes with a spoon, and tastes good (the chocolate flavor is nice). EAS and Designer Whey also make good, cost effect whey proteins.

Once again, don't expect miracles (or be fooled by glossy ads). Aside from any additives that a manufacturer may put in, it's usually just 20 grams of protein (per serving) that you could've gotten from a can of tuna or chicken breast. Whey protein just is a bit more convenient and easy to get down.

Good luck.
