Our new house doesn't have a fireplace. I don't know where to hang our stockings this year. I thought about just tacking them on the wall, but I was wondering if someone had a better and more creative idea.

How about getting a simple mantle shelf and putting it on the wall? You don't have to have a fireplace to have a mantle, after all. You can get one at places like Home Depot or other stores - and for the holidays, you might even use your decor (possibly graphics and a few lights, or fake fireplace inserts) to "create" a fireplace temporarily beneath it. Your possibilities are limited only by your budget and your imagination!

This might sound like an odd idea but I dont have a fire place either so I always hang our stockings from the curtain rod over our sliding glass door in our living room. Or any window would work too. Unless you have a really sturdy rod I would not suggest putting anything heavy in the stockings though. And yeah hanging them off a curtain rod is kinda high, but it does not look bad and it beats poking holes in the walls for something that would be gone in about a month. And since it's a little higher than the average mantel, it does keep little peeking eye's out of the stockings till Christmas morning. Good Luck!

If the children all have their own rooms, you could hang the stockings from the doorknob on the outside so it will be the first thing they see when they get up in the morning. Or,if they have bedposts, use one on the foot board. If they are still believers, tuck the filled stocking under their pillow as they sleep so they will know Santa came in to see them during the night. Personally, I love all the ideas for hanging them from the bannister...how pretty!

We hang ours from the entertainment center with those christmas characters you buy for hanging stockings up, so this way there is no holes in the furniture. You could hang them from the knobs of your cupboards or take a dowel rod and string the stockings across it and balance the rod from one chair to another or any other object that works.

My parents hang ours (although all of us are grown and do not live in that house) with the siblings' husbands, wives and grandchildren' stockings are all along the stair case. Evey step has a stocking hanging. Its nice coz when we get together for the holidays, we can see how our family had grown.

Instead of stockings use Santa hats to put gifts in and hide them around the house for your family to find. Children and adults love to look for them! Send them on a Christmas treasure hunt and give them hints.

I like the stair rails. That was a good answer. Sorry kittyrogers is such a *****. All of her answers are like that. I went to her Q&A page and have determined she is totally wack-o.
