That's a little too ambitious to be done in a healthy way. A better goal would be about 1.5 lbs per week. Here are some suggestions from my 360 Blog September 10.

There is no site specific way of losing fat... the old myth about working your abs to burn belly fat isn't true. To get rid of love handles, you need to lose overall fat. That happens with exercise and watching your diet. More on that below.

The most effective way to lose fat is aerobic exercise in the "moderate" fat-burning range, ideally first thing in the morning before you eat. When you wake your body is ready to burn fat and your levels of growth hormone are highest at that time. Later in the day it can take up to 30 minutes just to put your body into a fat-burning mode.

Another overlooked way to burn fat is by lifting weights. Skeletal muscle has very high caloric needs... almost twice that of adipose (fat) tissue. Put on a little muscle and you will burn calories all day even at rest. Be aware that skeletal muscle weighs more, so with this approach you may see your weight increasing while your body fat is melting away. Not realizing this often stresses folks who think they should be losing weight as a measure of fitness. Forget the scale, look in the mirror and you will be happy.

For diet, keep a diary for a couple of weeks counting calories, grams of protein, and grams of fat intake. It is easy with online sources of nutritional information (type the name of the food and calories into the Google search engine) and packaging labels. That will let you quickly figure out where the fat is coming from in your diet.

Fat gives you 9 calories per gram. So take the number of grams of fat, multiply by 9, then calculate what percentage the fat calories are of your total daily calories. Restricting the calories from fat to about 20% of your total intake is ideal for a maintenance diet... that isn't overly restrictive. Of note, you need some fat in your diet. For instance, the body uses fat to produce hormones. Once you have a picture of how to modify your diet, you can drop the diary and just go back to it occasionally if you are wanting to tweek things further.

There is a subset of questions that goes further and asks about "How to get a six-pack?" The answer is the same. Six-packs are 20% abdominal exercise and 80% diet. There is one caveat... abdominal muscles will form in the position that you exercise them, so be certain to pull them tightly toward your spine while doing crunches, etc. Also, during most lifting, the "core is active" which means that you should be stabilizing with contracted abs then too. Fail to do this and the abs will form, but bulging outward and the result is not attractive.

If you are trying to build muscle as a way to lose fat, then you may need to increase total calories and specifically your protein intake. I target about 0.8 g of protein per pound of body weight each day when actively building. That is far more protein than most people need in their diets.

Healthy tips for losing weight fast

1. Lessen calorie intake by 250-500 per day by substituting most high calorie foods for low fat varieties

2. Keep this cut going for at least one week or until you reach a weight loss level that lasts more than 4 days, then reduce calories by a further 200 per day.

3. Take high quality protein with mainly meals or if possible combine the low fat plant foods together at each meal.

4. Begin a standard weight-training program to keep muscle and boost metabolism.

5. Do aerobic activities on the days in-between the weights sessions to help burn fat directly.

6. Drink plenty of water all day to keep energy levels.

7. Lessen sodium eating by preparing meals using fresh, natural and healthy ingredients.

8. Gently raise the intensity level of the weights program forcing the body to hold onto muscle as calorie intake is lowered gradually over time.

9. Never go below 1500 calories per day, simply exercise more often when if this target is reached.

Diet and exercise. Gradual weight loss is better, I think. Do you want to keep the 20 pounds off? It's easier to keep it off if you ease yourself into a weight-loss regiment rather than shocking your system by starving or diet drugs -- that makes it easier to maintain. Sorry that you're tired of hearing that it's not healthy to lose so much weight so rapidly, but it's pretty true. Instant gratification can do significant permanent damage to parts of your body that you don't see (IE: internal organs versus just plain fat-loss) rather than benefiting the entire You. If I were going to try to lose as much weight as possible, I would: reduce carbs, drink a lot of water, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and maintain my protein intake -- and, I would exercise: both aerobic and anaerobic. Good luck and try not to fixate too much on a number for weight loss.

I'd like to lose 20 lbs in 2 or 3 weeks. I am in the process of losing weight myself.

Cut your calories. Exercise A LOT.
Eat fruits and veggies... diet pop or water.... some protein...

Um, I would cut carbs too

Cut your carbs and calories.
Just so you know...

3500 calories= 1 lb
To lose 1 lb in a week you have to burn 3500 calories more than you eat and that is 3500 times 14 to lose 20 lbs in two weeks.

No carbs...I mean none whats so ever and exercise your butt off....lots of cardio. I don't know if you will lose 20lbs in 3 weeks, but it will be pretty close. I did it and I lost 30lbs in 2months and that was with eating 20-40grams of carbs a day. If you did NONE you would probably lose more. I also didn't exercise that much either.

Good Luck!
