Bound's hubby here:

Well, first you have to see what you want to hit!

Any typical .30 round loses its umpff by about 1200 to 1300 yards. Ballistically, the only cartridge that may come close enough to retaining enought velocity to remain stabile at a distance of 2 miles would be the .50 BMG (Browning Machine Gun). However, the .50 BMG would be moving not much more that perhaps 200 fps, so you could probably swat it out of the air with a fly swatter.

With that as a premise, and you stick with the .50, you would use any rifle chambered for the .50 BMG. The most common one today is the Barrett.

I understand being recoil-sensitive, and that creates a real problem. Elk are big, tough animals, and it takes a big, tough cartridge to put one down. A 30-30 at really close range (75 yards or less) will do it, no doubt, but those shots aren't always guaranteed. A couple of possibilities to consider: the .35 Remington is a slightly more powerful cartridge than the .30-30, and Marlin chambers the 336 in .35 Rem, too. Recoil is about the same as the .30-30. A second option is to get a .30-06 and install a muzzle brake. This will reduce the felt recoil to .243 levels - barely a nudge. You'll want a good scope, though. Muzzle brakes are hell on scopes. Trying to time the market is a losing game. When you find what you want, get it.

2 miles with a rifle is luck. IF I had to try the .50 BMG round would be my choice, in its various rifle manufacturers. The longest sniper shot was a canadian team in Afganistan. They made a shot of 2,430 meters (just over 1.5 miles) which is still a 1/2 away from your question. My recommendation is to look at artillery. Maybe a 75mm cannon or such.

A rifle capable of "minute of angle" accuracy is a very good rifle. That means that said rifle coudd group 5 shots into a circle of one inch diameterat one hundred yards. If this circle is extrapolated to two miles in diameter, then the dive shots would be just wiwthin a circle 35.2 inches in diameter. Moreover due to a quality called the ballistic coefficient. that accuracy level decays as the distance increases. Therefore your weapon of choice would be a 105 howitzer with a fragmentation round!

Having said that, your query is utterly ridiculous.

Best bet is a .50 BMG. Lots of oomph and lots of inherent accuracy. Still, 2 miles is a LOOOONG way for any rifle. But, if I were going to hang my hat on any rifle to make such a shot, my bet would be on the .50
BMG.

do't know if you can do it but a 50 BMG with a fast light load would be best. a 220 Swift with a light bullet and ahot load might work nice. Buffalo hutnters used to kill at long ways away. I know a 45-90 will go 2 miles, maybe a 45-70, 45-120, 50-70. If you have a lot of money to blow. I would recommend a 50 caliber necked down to a 22 or at least a 30 caliber. It'll break the sound barrier guarenteed but shoot fast and straight.

The smallest you can go is 50 BMG, a 20mm would be preferable though. Realistically a two mile shot is in all likely hood not going to happen.

As a former mercenary soldier, and sniper, in my opinion the Barrett 50 caliber, Model 82A1rifle is far and away the most accurate and dependable extended range rifle available.

50 McMillan FatMac........(wildcat cartridge)
this cartridge is designed to launch 50-cal match bullets for1000 yard+ events. it is made from shortened and bottlenecked 20mm cannon cases. it has front ignition.
Balistics....
.50 fatmac 750/grain bullet @3425 fps...19,545 ft/lbs energy
.50 bmg 750/grain gullet@2769 fps....12,775 ft/lbs energy.
Also you can purchase lighter .50-cal bullets(around 600 grains) and they would be able to be launched faster than the 750 grain bullet.
.
this would be your best bet for achieveing a two mile shot with a "rifle".
