AIDS pretty much shuts down your immune system, the AIDS itself doesn't kill you, it's the illness you catch, like a cold or flu, that kills you because AIDS virus prevents your body from recovering.

The name itself should tell you: Auto Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It represses your immune system. AIDS does not kill you, COMPLICATIONS FROM AIDS kill you. In other words, the diseases that your body cannot fight off because it has been weakened by AIDS cause death. When a person dies of AIDS their death certificate will list a primary factor, often pnuemonia, as the primary cause of death. AIDS will be listed as a secondary cause or as a chronic underlying contributor.

AIDS itself doen't do anything to your body. AIDS itself is just the absence of an immune system in your body. The HIV virus attacks and kills the T-cells produced by white blood cells, needed to fight infections and diseases.

It totally kills you immume system. People with full blown AIDS sometimes die from pnamonia becuse their immume system is shot and they are unable to fight any kind of infection.
Luckily they have meds now a days so that people can live longer and be healthier, like Magic Johson. Unfortunatley, the people I knew back in the 80's who died very quickly did not have the technology and drugs available to them. But we all should do our part to prevent this. And educate the people that think this is just a "gay disease".
