Fries ARE from Belgium. They ARE called frites. And for a good alternative for French cuisine, I wouldn't try crepes, they take some time to master. But there are some very good desserts that you can make. (Definitely wouldn't try the escargot thing, it's snails. Yuck!)

FRENCH APPLE DESSERT

4 c. diced apples (peeled)
2 eggs
2 c. sugar
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. salad oil
1/2 c. chopped nuts
2 c. unsifted flour
2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt

Place apples in mixing bowl. Break eggs over apples and stir well. Mix sugar and cinnamon. Add to apples with salad oil and nuts. Mix.
Sift together the flour, soda and salt. Add to first mixture and beat well. Put into a greased and floured 9x13 inch baking pan. Bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) for 45 minutes. Cut into squares and serve with Caramel Sauce. Makes 12 servings.

CARAMEL SAUCE:

1 c. brown sugar (packed)
1 c. granulated sugar
1 c. heavy cream
1/2 c. butter
2 tbsp. flour
2 tsp. vanilla

Put sugars, cream, butter and flour into a heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Cook, stirring until mixture thickens a little. Stir in vanilla and serve hot over French Apple Dessert Squares.

The link below also has a lot of authentic French desserts. Just remember that the French use a lot less sugar in their pastries than Americans.

I don't think French fries have anything to do with France. This recipe does, however.

Croque Monsieur (Grilled ham and cheese sandwich)

8 slices of crust less white bread.
4 tbs heavy cream.
4 slices of Gruyère cheese.
4 slices of ham.
2 eggs.
1 tbs Butter.
Salt, pepper

Beat the 2 whole eggs in a container and add the cream, salt and pepper. Dredge the bread in this mixture.

Put 4 slices of the battered bread into a hot frying pan and reduce the heat to simmer. Place 1 slice each of the cheese and the ham on each slice of bread. Cap each build-up with a battered slice of bread.

Cover the pan and simmer on both sides until done, checking frequently [about 10 minutes].

Good, easy, and tres elegante!

french fries have been said to have started off in france. however, it was the belgian who came up with it. Pomme frites, originated there, and was eaten with a mayo type condiment. Plus the reason they are called french fries is because of the shape. Which was one of the classic ways french used the type of potato cut in dishes, i don't remember the whole exact name but i know "neuf" was in the name. easy french recipe? what about easy onion soup

INGREDIENTS:
3 tablespoons butter
4 cups thinly sliced onions, about 4 to 5 medium onions
2 thyme sprigs
1/2 cup sherry wine
4 cans beef broth (10 1/2 ounces each)
salt to taste
4 slices French bread, 1 inch thick
4 tablespoons cup shredded Gruyere cheese

PREPARATION:
Directions for easy French onion soup
In a large skillet over medium low heat, melt butter. Saute onion until golden in color, about 8 minutes. In a medium saucepan, combine beef broth and sautéed onion; bring to a boil.

melt butter in pot til butter foams, add the onions, caramalized on medium heat (you want the sweetness of the onions to come out, want it to get brown but not burnt, you will get this on medium high flame, and don't stire to often, this will allow the carmelization to happen). add the sherry wine, and reduce half way (or till you don't smell alcohol, sherry is a much sweeter wine will gives the french soup it's uniques classic french taste, add the beef broth, and reduce by half (to allow sauce to get bolder in flavor. Now season with salt if needed. add in an individual portion sized oven proof soup dish, add place the sliced french toasted bread on top with the guyere cheese. place in oven and broil till the cheese get gold and toasty. voila

French fries were "invented" in California. They are very easy to make: wash potatoes, cut in long strips, deep fat fry (or you can actually bake them, too). Salt if you want after removing the potatoes from the oil or oven.

Go to Epicurious.com.

I like preparing French mushroom soup. It's like onion soup for people who react to the acid in onions. It's delicious. You don't have to follow exact recipes; just get the gist of it and make it your way.
