It depends on why you are not getting enough sleep. Today most people are stressed. L-theanine does a good job of calming a person. It is strongest in capsule form but can also be taken in green tea without caffeine.

Schiff puts out a Melatonin product containing L-theanine. My only concern with Melatonin is that you are getting 10 times the hormone that is usually found in a person at nighttime. My hunch is that people need less Melatonin and more L-Theanine. You might consider taking a split Melatonin pill along with some L-Theanine.

I have had problems with insomnia for two years. Benadryl helps me sleep and it's not addictive. Some sleeping problems are caused by anxiety, (which is what causes mine).
I have found that watching a really stupid/funny show after taking a benadryl helps me relax and go to sleep. Also, reading makes me sleepy.

Turn off distractions, turn off lights, turn off your brain. If your brain is constantly racing with thoughts, making it hard to get to sleep, I highly suggest you learn meditative exercises.

Meditation helps to calm people, and relieve stress, which is the leading cause of poor sleep.

You can pick up a beginners guide to meditation at your local book store. Here's a simple exercise: focus on make deep steady breaths, filling your head with the feeling and the sound of your breathing, anytime a thought enters your mind, note it and discard it. The more your practice, the easier it gets.

Good luck!

I generally don't believe in taking medications if they aren't absolutely necessary, I recently purchased a sleep mask, which block out light, even the light emitted from your alarm can be enough to distract you from getting sleep.

Go to the local public library and check out a big, heavy book on organic chemistry or applied linear statistical analysis- they should put you to sleep in a jiffy, if they don't bore you to death first....

Try tiring yourself out. I exercise at night and when I go home I'm physically exhausted...but mentally I'm wide awake so I have my rituals to help settle my mind. Maybe you should have a night ritual too so that you can prepare you mind/body that it's time for bed.

And if that doesn't help..try alcohol

Work Out or other types of physical exertion! It will give you a bit of an adrenaline rush and then you will tire out and crash.
G'night!
