The sad part is it sounds like a poor attempt to racially balance out the department, and if taken to court, the people barred could win some cash.
If any of them are a minority, like Indian, Spanish, Italian, that would make it that much more easy to win. Its illegal to discriminate based on sex, race, creed, religion, or anything else. Sounds like an easy case of reverse discrimination to me and as much as I hate them, the ACLU needs to get involved.

I doubt very much if any heads will roll. After all, call me cynical, but if someone is in a high paid position and makes a mistake, they normally get promoted!!! And a payrise.
Avon & Somerset & Gloucestershire are NOT the only forces doing this either - and I suspect that some of the others will hastily be reviewing their recruitment policies. Suffice to say, that even though other forces may not be actively recruiting, they are more than happy to recruit or take as transferees from other forces, women, ethnic minorities and members of the gay community! Perhaps that is how they get around it by doing it on the sly - ie with no big recruitment drive!

What do you expect? If you have 1 police man per 100 people and you have a population of say 10000 of which 2000 of these people are female, say, and its been decided that you need some female officers and you don't have enough won't it be a good idea to hire some? And if you get 108 hairy tattooed ex con queer boys turn up, what do you do? Hire them. Come on use your brain. Answer that one.

No, I don't think heads will roll, but you are assuming that the people who were allowed to join were all minorty which did not happen. its funny how the press gets upset when white people are denied jobs, but black people are discriminated all the time and nothing is said at all. 50% of some black communites are unemployed! Black employment rates are usually twice that of whites. So I shed no tears.

This country is going mad. They say theyre in desperate need of more police and then ban applications from the people born here. We're heading towards giving more rights to foreigners than ourselves.

You fools.
This case was real. One of the men took it to tribunal and was found to have been unfairly discriminated against. What you haven't spotted is that this practice HAS been found to be illegal, just as illegal as a 'no blacks' policy.
So go away with your racist ' ..it's one law for us whites and another for them blacks ' nonsense. It's the same law, applied in the same way.

Somerset and Avon constabulary also 'randomly' deselected over 200 white hetero-sexual males from their applications in an attempt to meet government racial targets.

no because this is policy to get a larger quota of blacks in the force, one day they will realise that blacks dont want to join the force. i hope each one of these applicants sues the pants off this force to teach them a lesson with regard to discrimination.

This kind of thing happens over here, too. Why is reverse discrimination necessary to bring about equality? I don't get it.
