AS the sun gets lower in the sky and the days get shorter, mother nature tells then to fly south. Or perhaps they just decide that there is nothing left to eat and decide to go where there is food. Perhaps its a combination of lots of things like temperature change amount of daylight and lack of food.
They also might want to breed again so the go to where its warmer and there is plenty of food for their chicks.

It is governed entirely by the temperature, basically when it get's cold here there arent enough insects for the birds to eat. amazing to think that some of those young swallows are about to fly to Africa at perhaps only 7 weeks old.
