Even though the official language of the United States of America is English, last I checked, it was also the land of freedom. As for tv programs in Spanish and/or local radio shows, they are privately owned and again, they have the right, the freedom to speak. If you want to make everyone speak a certain language, then that should have been a requirement by the government to do so. However, how much freedom does one have if they are forced to speak English only? How long before they start telling you to do anything else if that is the case? Freedom, is what our forefathers fought for. Let's keep our freedom and let's not dictate to one another what he or she can or cannot do within the confines of the law.

HAHAHAHA!!!!! RFLMAO!!!

Some of the answers to this ignorant question are EXTREMELY funny....

not to mention...

SHAMEFUL

and

DEPRESSING.

I used to feel the way the person who asked this question does... but upon further introspection I realized this was simply because I was LAZY and just wanting to act like an idiot.

How many people have noticed that the language they are calling national or native seems to be named "ENGLISH" and NOT "AMERICAN"?

Get off your lazy behind and appreciate that not everyone comes from the same place as you. ALSO note that it isn't exactly EASY to learn an entire language for most adults in a short peroid of time.

My stepsister comes from MEXICO and despite what DUMB people seem to think... MEXICO isn't a great black hole Mexico has incredibly rich cultures and also more than 300 languages or dialects.

Mexicans don't come here because they are bad people looking to take advantage of the pooooooooooor US of A they come here because of politics and i would bet that whole "land of the free" slogan has something to do with it as well.

AND DONT THINK THEY ARENT HOMESICK AND MISS THINGS... Mexico is a country of prounounced contradictions... there may be a lot of sad things but there is also a lot to be proud of.... there is a lot of beauty to be found there.

My sister is from Mexico City, one of the largest cities in the world. SHE IS FLUENT IN ENGLISH.... BECAUSE FOR SOME REASON MEXICO HAS TAKEN THE INITIATIVE TO HAVE SCHOOLS WHO TEACH IN PRIMARILY ENGLISH.

Of course you have to be a little more middle or upper class i beleive to be able to afford these things... wich seems to be one of the problems with politics in mexico. A lot of the time you have people who live in hovels or mansions. The USA doesnt seem to be doing so well in the middle class department itself lately.

Last time i looked MEXICO city also had a school for the Japansese and a few other countries as well.

stop being retarded.

I bet some of you people would rather the entire world declare "english" as the global language so you can actually get off your lazy butts and go somewhere for a change! Dont try to use that "i would learn another language if i went to another country excuse." You dont think other countries make it a point to cater to the english speakers???????

WHY do they speak SPANISH in MEXICO anyway??? THINK ABOUT IT!

I'm tempted to be so facetious as to say... the mexican people have done enough catering to other people's languages.

IF YOU REALLY THINK ITS SUCH A BIG PROBLEM... then do EVERYONE a favor.... particularly the NON ENGLISH SPEAKERS that pain you so much and START HELPING them to pick up english and pick of a little of thier language in the process. You'll be a better person for it and more doors will open for you if you are intelligent enough to look for them.

If they want to watch TV or listen to the radio in Spanish, that is fine. I listen to Japanese music and I also like some Spanish music too. I watch Japanese movies and read Japanese books, as well as English books. The difference? I also know English.
Many people come here from all over the world, and they have to learn English. How many people do you know have to be bilingual Dutch to get a job? Or bilingual German? Probably none. The purpose of a melting pot is to add your own spice, but not be a separate thing altogether. If you are going to live in any country, you should not expect others will learn your language.
I don't care if they speak their native language, but they need to speak English too. They should also not expect to shove their kids into school not knowing any English.

Obviously you don't get out much. Most of the WORLD speaks 2 languages to accommodate English speakers as well as their own. German kids begin learning English in kindergarten.
Get a passport and see the world!

But if they are going to put things in spanish like radio programs and tv shows it is only fair that they translate these things into English as well.

Although I agree with your sentiments, there is something to consider: many young Spanish speaking people come here in order to send for their older family members who may be aged & unable to care for themselves. Many are too old or not of quick mind enough to learn another language & yet desire to be w/their family instead of living alone & vulnerable. Many programs are for these people who are not involved in life outside the home.

You are extremely ignorant. Do you know the U.S.A is a country made of immigrants? there is no such thing as a native American in this country. Oh well yes, the poor people that were killed, abused and robbed and that now live in reservations.

Every person in this country is Irish, english, Spanish, african, Italian, Indian, or Hebrew descendant.

Do you even know that a major part of the English language is mixed with Spanish, french, african, native indian, italian and even japanese?

Instead of evolving and openin your mind to other cultures you are so ignorant to believe that you are a pure american. This is a global world and you live in the most diverse country.

So man good luck cause you are going to need it.

Your first mistake was thinking. Your question demonstrates your lack of intelligence. Thank God this is a FREE country and we can speak any language we choose. Mentally challenged people such as you only want one language to be spoken because you are too stupid to learn another.

I can picture you discussing your class options in high school. "Momma, Poppa wat ya'll tink of French or Spanish?"

"We be racist and stupid son so don't you be picken any dat foreign stuff."

I really wish we had an official language, so we could all speak to and learn from each other. That kind of assumes people will stay in school long enough to learn it. I guess our fear is that saying "X" is it will offend non-Xers...

I understand that ASL is probably the easiest to learn, but you almost need a deaf contact to be fluent in it...

This is 'sort of' why our country is educationally behind some European countries, in that we want to be mono-linguistic, our children grow up with limited ability to communicate in business with other cultures, and we tend to resist learning languages. We want the world to conform to us.

I prefer a more global perspective personally, and wish I could speak more languages. I like it that we are multi-cultured and am not offended to hear other languages spoken as I go about my day. Language is non-threatening, not nearly as much as national leadership (regardless of party) that seems self serving, incompetent, often taking the wrong path.

Just personal opinion, nothing more.
