Even though a cure for cancer has not been found, new drugs to fight cancer have been developed. These agents have allowed us to put more people into remission, stabilize their disease, and prolong survival. Sometimes stabilization of the tumor can be a very good event, especially when a person's tumor continues to grow despite multiple treatments. Cancer is now considered a chronic illness like diabetes or heart disease as people can live many years after being diagnosed with cancer. It is no longer a death sentence like it used to be.

Take it from a mother of a child with cancer. YES, the government should spend even MORE money on cancer research, particularly childhood cancer research. Thanks to the research, my daughter can be treated for her cancer instead of left to chance. Though there is not a cure for her type, the treatments allow a high survival rate. Huge strides have been made in cancer research. The cure will not come overnight.

What are you talking about? There are millions of people who are in remission for years and years after their treatments. A lot of cancers can be cured and a lot of them can't. It's a matter of time and effort and yes they need to keep researching. I have lymphoma and the cure rate of the kind I have is 90%. That does mean that 90% of people who get it are cured right? Go do some research.

Not all diseases are "cured" in the sense that you take pills for a week or two and you're all better. There are many drugs that kill cancer cells, and put the person in remission and then eventually they are cured. The treatments they have now save many many lives. Just in the people close to me I have seen many people be saved. So, yes, the government should, because we are all at risk, and we should keep the progress going!! (just think if someone though coming up with cures for many other diseases was worthless, we would have to worry about many many more diseases!!)

It's not only the government providing monies for cancer research but a whole movement across the United States in the form of Relay for Life, the Susan G. Komen foundation, Saint Jude's Childrens Hospitals and many other worthwhile charities/ institutions. I participate in our local Relay every year as well as volunteer for hospice so I think it is of the uppermost importance to keep the funding going. If the government does not do their part and take the lead on this issue, who will?
I also wanted to add if you ever get the chance to participate in a Relay, you will see the result of research in the suvivors walk...you can see that your efforts are making a difference!

the advances in cancer treatment over the past years is amazing! people with cancer are surviving longer and leading better quality lives than they did even ten years ago. none of that could have happened without money being spent!
as for corporations looking to find 'cures' for such issues as hair loss and erectile deficiencies... well.... obviously men are still in charge! to choose to spend money on researching these two issues over serious life-threatening issues is just moronic!
so in answer to your question should gov't still be providing taxpayers money for cancer? YES!!!!
i'd rather my taxdollars go to cancer research than to some of the stupid things the gov't is currently spending money on!

Private corporations give the public what they want, that's a reflection of our society. We really are more concerned with cell phones, and bling then we are about our true health.
Yes the gov should continue to support research. Cancer is not a single entity anymore than television is a single show. It a class of diseases with thousands of subtypes each with their own cause. It is wrong to think there is one cure for all cancer. If you dont think this is a worthwhile cause give up one afternoon of your life and visit a hospice patient.

I'm just wondering how this question would be asked if it were you or someone you care about had cancer. visiting a doctor in as little as 10-5 years ago, and the doctor said you had cancer, was almost a death sentence, now with more people aware that it can, and more than likely will, happen to them helps people to have it detected earlier with a better success rate at recovery.

That is not true. Many people have been cured of their cancer. The tough part about cancer is that "cancer" is not one single disease. There are many variables...variables within each type of cancer, and variables within each individual patient. Therefore, there is not one single cure for all cancers for all persons. Furthermore...millions of those dollars that are used for cancer research are raised by people who have been affected by cancer!
