As far as I know, Minerva has never harmed any creature when out in my yard

They probably have a nest or young ones near perhaps there's a good food source and they want to protect it. It's not uncommon for some birds to attack things larger than they for those very reasons.

No I have never seen this but I believe it. One afternoon, my little (crazy) female cat brought me a baby bird into the living room to (I guess) brighten my day. It was all too typical a scenario: she laid the bird down in the middle of the living room and started making these weird noises as is to say "Look what I brought for you-aren't you proud of me?". Anyway, the little bird was alive and I scooped it up to put it outside when I noticed an entire flock of birds swooping over my front porch! This was in broad daylight and these guys were not kidding! So I placed the baby bird out there and not a minute later, the gang of adult birds had taken it away. I suppose birds are smart and brave because they were very menacing that day. Ican really belive that they would know a cat in their area and attack it (well deserved, too).

Birds will attack any predator if they have reason. Usually that reason is a nest with eggs/babies in it, but some birds are just nasty all around. Blue Jays are notorious for attacking whatever they perceive as a threat. We had some in our backyard when I was a kid....dive-bombed the poor dog when he was just trying to take a dump, and did the same to my older brother, pecking him right on top of the head as he attempted to take the trash out.

And if this were my question, I'd give Ralph W "best answer"....that is one of the funniest responses I've ever read!

Most of the time it's protective parental instincts. That's usually when birds attack cats. They are afraid of the cat getting into the nests. Other than that, it could just be an overly territorial bird.

Yes, a bird used to chase the next door neighbor's cat and peck it on the head. This the bird did everyday. We figured the cat must have gotten into the bird's nest.

Mockingbirds are known to attack cats and people, too. Sometimes just walking under their nest or near their nest they will swoop down and get you on the head. I've seen them attack cats just for walking across the yard. I assume there are some other birds that will do this, too.

Birds and squirrels scream at my cat when he comes out side. But he loves to hunt and he is pure evil and mean. So they have a right to warn other animals to watch out. Maybe the cat killed a family member?

Here in Australia there are often birds that surround my cats and squawk at them...it really spins the cats out! I think they are alerting others to the potential danger.
