3 guys walk in a hotel to get a room. clerk says "that's $150." so each guy divies up $50. for their share of the room. later the hotel manager checks out the registry and sees that the clerk over-charged the 3 guys by $50. and tells the clerk to refund the guys the $50. so the clerk takes 5 ten's out of the register and goes to their room. on the way up the elevator he thinks; "how the hell am i gonna split $50. evenly between the 3 guys?" he decides that he'll give each guy back $10. and pocket $20. which adds up to the $50. he took from the till.
now the question to the riddle is this: if each guy got back $10. from the original $50. they each paid, that means the 3 guys paid a total of $120. for the room. $40.x3=$120. right? so if that's true, and the clerk pocketed $20. what happened to the other $10.?
This is not a trick question, & must be done to the exact decimal (so no 33.3's).

I understand this adds up if you put it in other ways, but each guy paying $50, then given back $10each equals $40 each, then 40x3 is $120, plus the 20 the clerk pocketed only equals $140. The question is why doesnt this add up?

Nothing happened to the extra 10 because $40.x3=$120 but that 120 already INCLUDES what the clerk has pocketed, so there's no need to add 120 plus 20. Think about it, the hotel only really wanted 100, and the clerk pocketed 20, therefore that's the 120 that they paid.
The problem leads you to believe that since the clerk kept 20 that the guys should pay 150-20=130. However the guys don't pay 20 less than the 150 because they get back 30 dollars.

Say it did come out to 40 bucks a piece, thats still overcharging them by 20 dollars if they were initially charged 50 bucks too much. 150 bucks minus the 50 bucks is 100 bucks, right? Their total that they put together was 120 bucks, right? If he gave them back 10 a piece, They still think the total was 120. that extra 20 goes into the clerks pocket, and the 3 dudes still get 10 bucks back a piece.
3 x 10 + 20 = the 50 bucks split up accordingly. And those dudes dont think theyre getting jerked, because it looks like a mistake is being corrected by giving them back and additional 10 bucks a piece.

you could also say that there is an extra $20 because if the register has $120 AFTER they gave the change back, then120 in the till + 30 back to the customers + 20 to the clerk equals 170 dollars. it's all in how you do the math and distribute it. of course , again, there is no missing 10 spot if you do it correctly.
