The SAT is pretty standard, and is by far the more commonly used one in the USA. As a previous answerer wrote, the Midwest is particularly fond of the ACT, but they will generally take the SAT as well.
I know some colleges in the east coast that ONLY take the SAT, so I would suggest taking that multiple times rather than taking both.

Good question; I am going to take one myself.
The ACT is not for military. Like someone said, the ACT is generally used in the West while in the East the SAT is more common. The only difference I can find is that the ACT is cheaper.
Since I'm only taking for the first time (in seventh grade) I have no idea what the difference is, yet.

Take the SAT-take the latest one which is SAT III I believe. A lot of colleges prefer it over the ACT. Good luck.

Depends on what area of the country you are in. In the Midwest, they tend to take the ACT; in the South, they prefer the SAT. Many colleges will take either one. I recommend taking both tests and seeing which one you do better on.

SAT is much more important. I got 2 perfect scores in math and reading, but my writing score was only 720, for a total of 2320. I only read this SAT guide, and that is how I got such high scores:

I recommend this guide to anyone seeking to get a higher score to get into a first choice college.

Most schools tend to take both, but some people are better at one than the other. I'd recomend taking both and then you can use your higher score. Also, you can ask around and find out what other people in your school tend to do well on. In my school people tend to do better on the ACT, just because of the way my school teaches I guess.

Depends on the school. Some like my alma mater West Virginia required the ACT. The Ivies will want the SAT.
Check with the school(s) you're looking to attend to see which one they want.

SAT is accepted most everywhere. Most good colleges won't accept ACT alone.
