When my dog was a puppy I just took him outside every hour or so. Make a point of walking them to the door and telling them they are going outside to go to the bathroom, or whatever phrase you want to use. When they do pee outside, praise them and say what a good dog they are. You get the idea. You will need to continue doing this for awhile. It gets annoying but it will be worth it, and it only really works if you are consistent! Eventually you will be able to take them out less frequently, and it won't be long before the dog is going to the door on its own! Hope it works for you...it's what worked with my dog!

Some suggest using peed pads and gradually leading them to the door.
Some suddest leaving in crate. That is the "pros", but I think that is BS.
Personally, I keep the pup around me at all times. I take her out every 20-30 minutes. I take the pup out after she drinks or eats. I also pay attention to her time of sleep after she has wrestled with her big brother. I admit there have been accidents in the house, but I would prefer the pup play with her brother and me. This way she knows she is loved. The only time I leave her and her brother in a crate is when I need to go to a store. She is 11 weeks old and her brother is will be 2 years old in December.

I was told to buy dog carrier. The idea being he won't go were he sleeps. I adopted him at 5 yrs old he was an outside dog & he was trained in 2 days. I do put down piddly pads in the kitchen near the door if I am going to be gone longer then normal.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/trainingdog

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

You have to take him/her out at the certain times you want him/her to and you have to keep that up, and if he/she goes in the house spray him/her with a spray bottle of water, and put him/her right outside right away pick up the pee/poo then let him/her in. That's what we do for our dog and it is working. He/she will get used to that schedule and get used to going at those times, Also you have to make sure that it wasn't an accident (if he/she goes inside) cause if it's an accident and you yell at him/her that isn't good. Also you should put his/her food on a schedule put it down let him/her eat then pick it up, and 20 minutes from when he/she ate take him/her out. Hope this helped. JUST REMEMBER YOU HAVE TO KEEP THIS UP, UNTILL HE/SHE GETS USED TO IT, OTHERWISE IT WON'T WORK.....

what i have always done is let my dogs out very often and they will let me know when they need to go out eventually, if they use it in the house , clean it up immediately and use something to make their scent dissappear.

one of my dogs barks at the door when he needs to go out and another one will nudge me , and another one will scratch so they pretty much have their own ideas on how to get my attention to let them out

just don't ignore any sign that it may give u

Every time it makes a mistake in the house, immediately take it outside. First however, take the dog to the area, and scold it saying "no-bad dog" I don't agree with rubbing his nose in his pee, but some tell me that works. Then if you have him outside and he pees, say "Good Dog" and if possible give him a reward. Make a real fuss over him when he does it right, and let him know when he has done wrong, that you are unhappy with him.

Once it is trained to potty outside, it will only want to potty outside and will let you know. You can actually train them to ring a bell or do something else to let you know they need to go out. Some dogs will whine or whimper, some will bark. My lab mix just sits by the backdoor and stares at me. It gets my attention much better and nicer than barking. My foster Danes usually just walk back and forth from the backdoor to me to let me know.

Best housebreaking book ever is Housebreaking: Pure and Simple by Mark and Dru Katz, but here's the gist.

First Diet: Remember, what goes in must come out. The choice of dogfood and treats can definitely have an effect on how often your dog will need to go to the bathroom. Higher quality foods that are easier to digest and have higher concentrations of nutrients produce less waste because you need to feed less and the dog will digest more of it. Too many treats during the day can make your dog have to potty more often. Avoid excessive treats or use the dog's normal food.

Second: Keep control of your dog at all times. Get a crate. It should just be big enough for the dog to lay down, stand up and turn around in. He should be in the crate anytime he isn't being watched (when you are out of the house for even a minute, when you are sleeping, watching tv, cooking, reading, or ANYTHING that involves you taking your eyes off of him). Do not talk to him when he is in the crate or when you first take him out, or that will make him anxious. The crate should never be used for punishment and should always be associated with something good. Don't feed him just before putting him in the crate or allow him to have water while in the crate.

When he is NOT in the crate he should be on a leash attached to you. This way he can never be out of your sight or control to sneak around the corner and have an accident. When you see your puppy getting ready to go in the house, quickly snap the leash to get his attention (not to hurt him or punish him) and say in a calm firm tone "NO!". Then take him right outside to finish up. When he goes outside praise him like crazy and give him a TINY piece of a yummy treat. If you don't have the leash in your hand, you will have to run after the dog to make the correction and this will just teach him to run away from you. If you find an accident in the house, DO NOT punish your dog. It wasn't his fault you haven't taught him to potty outside and it isn't his fault you weren't there to make the correction. Just clean it up and use an enzyme cleaner and odor eliminator to get rid of the smell.

Take the dog out to potty after eating, after drinking a large amount, after waking up from sleeping, and then several times during the day. Wait patiently for him to potty outside THEN praise him and give him lots of love and attention. You want him to do his business as soon as you go out, not try to play and romp for 10 minutes before he does it. Sometimes you just can't wait that long!

Puppy pads and newspaper can be very confusing for dogs. They learn to potty in the house on the paper, then you have to reteach them to potty outside. They can become very anxious and frustrated using this method. Start by teaching him to eliminate only outside and you will have fewer setbacks.

It's not something you can teach. You can however, potty train it and set a bathroom schedule. Immediatiely after eating and drinking, when you return home, that nature. Get a set schedule and your pet will let you know when you're not keeping the schedule.
