Hi, I have an oil painting of a landscape. It is signed in the bottom left hand corner by either 'hugh j' or 'hugh g'. I am lead to believe that it came from the Fine Art Society in Bond Street possibly in the 70's.
A family story is that the artist is Hugh Griffith - the actor that starred in Ben Hur and many other movies.
Any help will be really appreciated.
Many thanks.

It will be difficult identifying a painting on the signature alone. There was a Hugh Gresty (1899-1958) who lived most of his life in Cornwall and was interested in landscapes and architectural scenes (oil paintings, watercolours, sketches).

I don't know of any evidence linking Hugh Griffith with art apart from in "How to Steal a Million" (1966), where he plays a legendary art collector and forger - specialising in paintings... That may add to the mysterious charm!

However, if you're keen to identify your painting you should find an expert in oil paintings. The next "Antiques Roadshow" is on October 4th in Glasgow (and then October 26th, Southport).
