There are other questions that need to be answered before recommendations, such as how big a yard to you have? What is your work vs home schedule like? Where do you live? Is it cold more of the year or hot more of the year? If you are away from home, do you plan on leaving it indoors or out? How much each week are you going to allow for grooming the dog? How old are your children? There are plenty of websites out there, but pay attention to: activity level required to stay healthy (yard size), grooming (time), hair length (weather) and other factors.
All that having been said, I have always had good luck with pound puppies or "foundlings". My oldest now, I found abandoned at a truck stop. The clerk said the "owner" who appeared homeless had bought a bus ticket and abandoned the dog there. She is THE sweetest thing, and is 15 years old now and almost blind and deaf, but we love her lots!

you said fur not too long. does it have to be short hair or can it have medium hair? austrailian shepherds are wonderful with kids and they have hair but it is not long like my shelties are (which is also good with kids)
corgis are great with kids as well (I love the herding breeds)
If it has to have really short hair, try a beagle. they love kids.
Unless your kids have had dogs before, I would stay away from terriers. They are great dogs for people who know a little about what they are doing.
After you get your dog, sign up the kids and the dog for puppy classes. Let them each be in charge of teaching certain things. (one kid teaches sit and down another one gets to do tricks, etc) and the let them change out every few days. This way they will each have something to teach and the dog will be listening to the kids and not just the parents.
good luck

Well instead of thinking in terms of a puerbreed have you thought of going with a mixed. Some of the best dogs are mutts. But if your deadset on having a pure breed then check out the website I posted. It will ask a few questions and then give a few choices.
It was a great help when we were looking for a new dog a few years ago.

If you are worried about shedding, don't go with the Corgi, we have two and both of them shed enough to knit a whole other dog (even with regular grooming!)
I would highly recommend getting a shelter dog. Knowing you are saving the life of your pet is very rewarding, but having the unconditional love is priceless!

I would suggest a pitbull. They are great with kids. They are a medium sized dog AND they don't shed. I have one and know a ton of people with pitbulls. They are one of the best breeds out there!

I would suggest to rescue a dog from the pound. They really want a loving home and they also don't cost too much! You can pick out whichever one you want. Good luck to you and enjoy!!

I suggest a mixed breed, there are tons of small, kid friendly dogs in shelters. www.petfinder.org
If you do want a certain breed look into rescues...
I'd need more info on you and your lifestyle to recommend a breed...
