According to a recent article (October 2006 issue of Reader's Digest) 1/3 of housholds headed by an illegal immigrant are on some form of welfare. There is an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the United states. Since we don't have a way of knowing how many of those 11 million per household, we can not say how many of them are actualy on welfare. Welfare our tax dollars pay for to support people who broke the law to even be here. Benefits they are receiving, which they do not pay into.
Question: How do you feel about this?

Yes, I do think of the people suffering. I think of all the Americans suffering that can't get on welfare because it is so enundated with paying benefits to illegal immigrants.

Primamari: I didn't say a thing about Mexicans. I said "illegal immigrants". They come from many countries. Please do not put words in my mouth. If you have something against Mexicans, that is your own issue.

Hellion: I agree there are many pressing issues, but ignoring this one won't make the other ones go away. We need to deal with many issues to better our country. This is one of them.

well, like you said, you cant really tell how much is being paid out to illegal immigrants, so its hard to say how much its really costing us. there are plenty of legal citizens that could be working but arent, and they're costing the rest of us a lot of money, the war has put us into the biggest debt the country has ever been in, and the economy has slumped and jobs are at a low, and thats costing us tons of dollars.
so, yeah, illegal immigrants are an issue, but they're hardly the biggest problem at the moment. i do feel that they should come here LEGALLY or not at all, but i dont believe that they're the cause of all the US's problems right now. they're really just a drop in the ocean.
ADDED -
oh, i agree that this issue needs to be addressed, and there needs to be some type of resolution made, but in a time when there are many much more pressing issues to iron out this one has been treated like there are no other issues in the world. i feel that if we solved the other more drastic problems first we'd have a much easier time cleaning up this one. and to be realistic, there are legal americans that are abusing the system that are costing us a lot more than immigrants are.
i guess i tend to take the approach of a man who's tired, hungry, and freezing to death, but then sees a rabid wolf in front of him. there are other problems besides the wolf, and they're serious ones, but if we dont focus on the one thats about to eat us first, the others arent going to matter a whole lot.

All though I have always thought that the Readers Digest is a solid, informative magazine - I have now changed my mind.
Most of my family is here illegally and not a single freaken one of them is on welfare in any way shape or form. Nor would they or could they be.
It is true that most of them work under forged documents, it would be near impossible to get welfare with a fake ID or soc. sec card. It isn't easy for an American citizen to get!! This is propaganda designed to make us hate illegals.
And, NO I do NOT support ANY non-citizen taking any sort of welfare!! Its wrong, & my family & freinds ALL AGREE!!

The welfare system in this country was designed to assist the needed LEGAL CITIZENS of this country. While the ILLEGAL immigrants are spending (receiving) any of this money, a legal citizen is being denied what should be their right. It must stop. How can we defend penalizing our own to feed an ILLEGAL stranger? We simply just can’t do it, their own country will have to find a way to assist them, it is not our job.

I feel like I am getting robbed of my hard earned tax dollars. The real problem lies in the children of the immigrants. They are having babies out of wedlock at an alarming rate. Their parents do not know of the "entitlement" way of living that other ethnic groups have become accustomed to in the good old USA. But the children of the immigrants are learning fast. All they have to do is prove they were born here; voila, they are citizens. And they don't have to work their asses off like their parents do-all they have to do is have babies and go get Medicare and welfare.

Only 1/3rd?
But, everyone will need some kind of hospital care, sooner or later!
I would surmise that 100% of the illegals are on 'welfare' as they are here, forcing us to cater to their needs, which is also a definition of 'welfare'.
Then there are the huge school expenses that all the legal residents, and, citizens, pay!
No wonder that the majority of Legal immigrants of all groups, (Canadian, Mexican, Asian, European, etc.) object equally to illegals!

you can take any information and make up whatever kinds of facts and figures you want. You can find a website to support anything including marrying your cousin. Most of the Mexicans I knew were not on any kind of welfare at all. They had jobs, made money , payed taxes out of their paychecks, and even had insurance. Readers digest most not have interviewed many Mexicans. If your going to get information from someplace , try and get a balanced perspective.

Them getting off totally tax free and all being on welfare are nothing more than myths created for propoganda. Has any been able to actually get a link of an official document? Of course not but it supports their opinion so they go with it. Anyone can cut and past text and then claim that it's authentic, just go to any Hate sight, they have tons of them.

I think it stinks. But I think it's hilarious certain people have such a hard time believing it. Just wait- someone will call Reader's Digest a racist, Nazi organization that can't be counted on for reliable information.

I wonder where Readers Digest got their info from? The welfare department does not keep track of which nationalities are recieving, only their geograpical locations and size of the families.
Would be an interesting read, can you post a link so I can read it please?
