An Italian primitivo in an earthier style than a California zinfandel, an entry level Burgundy, a Rioja Crianza, even an Austrian zweigelt. You should be able to find any of these in the US$10 range. If going for Chianti, go for a Classico or Colli Senesi. If you don't care about money with Chianti, then Classico Riserva -- or spring for a Brunello. Also consider a Morellino.
I personally would want something earthy with mushrooms and olives, rather than a fruit bomb, and a fruit bomb isn't a food wine anyway. European wines will tend to be earthier than New World wines in general.

Good heavens... people! It's pizza! Chianti (try Straccali) or if you're on a very limited budget, Citra Montepulciano D'Abruzzo :)
Another good bet would be Montecillo Rioja Crianza (Spain)
None of the above will break your bank and they'd all be just perfect.
Oh, wait... almost forgot... Lambrusco!! If you're into something a bit sparkling... Reunite Lambrusco is fine... and if you have a Trader Joe's nearby? Their Lambrusco from Reggiano is just awesome!! Sparkles so much it's in a champagne bottle... I think it's called Amabile Lambrusco :)
Serve the Italian reds and the Spanish one at cool room temp, Lambruscos need to be chilled....

The general rule is red wine with "red" foods and white wine with "white" foods, but you can really just drink whatever kind of wine you like.

The old way was red with hearty foods (beef) , white with light foods (seafood or fruits), but now whichever wine you like drink that one. I like I pinot noir the best though.
