Take all his money off him, then he cannot buy any.
P.S. he isn't a teenager until he is 13.

There is so much advice going around about smoking I don't quite know where I should start...
1) tell him if he smokes 30 or more a day, he won't live until he is 40 (not to scare you)
2) if he keeps on smoking he will have less sperm/less chance of having a kid/etc.
3) he won't be able to keep up with anyone else in sports (he will be able to see the effects instantly)
4)put some horrid spinach solution around all the buds of his cigarettes
5) tell him most girls prefer men who don't smoke (they are usually the better looking ones)

if all fails...
6)use a litre bottle with the cotton wool wrapped around a cigarrette and put it in the mouth of the bottle. squeeze and release the bottle to imitate the lungs and do that until the cigarette is burnt out. Do another 2 or 3 or how any ever it takes for quite a bit of black tar to stick onto the wool. Tell the kid that the tar will stay in the lungs, the tar won't go away and it would be like having self inflicted asthma (emphasise the disgusting nature of the tar).
7) He will notice breathing problems in 5-10 years' time.

If it is stress related, go to a stress management seminar or workshop to get the thing sorted.

Good luck

I have heard a theory that if you sat him down and MADE him smoke a whole packet of cigarettes one after the other, that would do it. He would certainly feel very sick after 3 or 4! Not to mention 10-20! Or show him some pictures of what will happen to his lungs and tell him that people who get lung cancer sit coughing up tar into bowls. NOT smoking is the bigger decision - he will be more of a man amongst his mates if he doesn't - and no girl will ever want to kiss him if he has smokers breath and yellow teeth!! I am 21 and quit a few months back - it isn't easy, but it is so nice that my clothes and hair don't stink of smoke anymore! Good luck, and well done for being such a good parent and caring so much about this, it is so important.

He is 12 years young!!! you are the adult here and need to take control back, and quickly!! he is not a teenager, you are already treating him as if he is one. treat him like he is your child. OK, know where he is at all times and check he is telling the truth. Know who he is with at all times and check he is telling the truth. Do not give any money to him, not even lunch money, packed lunch will ensure he doesn't starve. Keep your money under lock and key. Do not smoke yourself, if you do them stop, this is the best you can do for your son. Have a time he needs to be in at night, for a 12 yr old in my house that would be 8pm, bed at 9pm.
Find activities for him to prevent him from being bored, eg; swimming, badminton, something which will knacker him!! Above all talk to him and be assertive, tell him you will not accept this behaviour, tell him there are rules and they have to be abided by. If all else fails then keep him in the house, I have always told my kids that if I ever found they smoked or did any drugs I would lock them in a room and put food under the door, I remain steadfast in this because if they did do any of those things there is only me to help them, society doesn't, and I think if they can't stop themselves then I will stop them. I guess social services will be on to me for my strong opinions but my kids are my responsibility and I sort them out. so far so good, 15 - 30 and nothing too bad happening yet...............

That all depends on your relationship with this child. Where you consistantly there with him while he's growing up? Did you show love consistently, as well as firm discipline? Did you talk to him about drugs and such in the past?
If you're one of those parents that did'nt spend quality time with him, then my condolensces to you. He's now going to try to do what he wants because he believes he can get away with it and you don't really care...in his mind that is.
If you were a good parental model and did spend quality time with him, he's just trying to find himself. You'll need to step in and show him why he should'nt do this. I'm sure there are anti-smoking organizations that can supply you with plenty of literature to help you. He may be under a lot of peer pressure from his so-called friends in school. Again you'll have to step in. Find other activities he can get involved with that will enable him to make new friends and hopefully forget this desire to smoke.
I've also heard of one extreme example that might work. Have him smoke an entire pack of cigarettes, one right after another. He'll get so sick of them that this might stop him for good.

Most children want to try smoking, but most of them grow out of it. It's just typical (almost) teenage rebellion so don't blow it up into a bigger issue than it really is.
The fact is, he's getting older and you can't be watching him 24/7 so let him make his own mistakes.
Having said that, my 17 year old brother has never smoked in his life because he's really into sport and wouldn't want it to affect his performance. So if he does play a sport you could try that to persuade him (especially if you're bit sneaky about it: "You're not playing as well as normal son, perhaps the cigerettes are making you slower."
Or using guilt rather than anger might be worth a try, ie "I'm so disappointed with you" or "I must have done something wrong as a parent" coupled with a sad look on your face might just shame him into stopping.

punishment in this case is not really an option, letting him smoke a packet would not change a thing if he still insists to smoke, he will smoke. i think what you need to do is talk to him and ask him why he is doing it, maybe he is trying to belong in a peer group, making an image or identity in order to be accepted, sitting down with him and reaching in might help, if he wanted to be treated as an adult treat him as such. ask him if he wanted to see what smoking does to his body, show him the consequences of his actions, reality wud definitely be an eye opener to anyone even to a 12 year old

Buy his favourite brand and open the pack.Buy fresh milk and dip all the cigarettes.Spill the cigarettes and place them in oven to dry. When dry return them in the pack as before but remove 1 or 2 cigarettes and place them in his room.
Should he come across them, he will think maybe he had misplaced them.Once he smokes them the taste will repel his urge to continue smoking. It's worth a try,it might not be effective.

well this may sound a little extreme, but my friends mum made him sit infront of her and smoke a whole packet of fags. It made him as sick as a pig!
Take him to one of those museums. I went to see that body exhibition at earls court and they had lungs that were diseased from smoke. Go on the internet and look under google images! Good luck

Failing that chop his fingers off :)

This will be cruel, but I had a friend who did it & it worked. Sit down with him, give him a new packet of cigs & make him sit there & smoke the whole packet, no stopping, he'll feel really ill. The get online with him & show him autopsy pictures from lung cancer patients & or take him to a local hospice to visit dying lung cancer sufferers who will convince him it's not the way to go. Tough love.
Good Luck!
