Get a used Honda or Toyota. You can get a decent one for 3 or 4 grand, and it won't break down on you.

The big problems is how the car was taken care of before you buy it. Would you by a Chevrolet Impala driven by a soccer mom or a Civic driven by a racer boy?

Take your mechanic with you and check everything. I change the timing belt to all the cars I buy used and take them for a tune up.

Compacts, I would buy a Focus, Corolla, Lancer, or Civic. but any used car you buy it has to be checked up.

Honda is best for quality and resale because they last so it will still be in good condition when you get tired of it or will last if you decide to rock it till' the wheels fall off. But for price I don't know cars are expensive these days Mazda has some good priced cars not sure of their quality though.
