But if you want presume he's alive for the moment, he'd be NAKED. Under the shell is not skin, the shell IS the skin...so-to-speak. Take the shell off and you would be looking at his guts!
They don't "live" in their shells, they live in burrows or holes in the ground with their shells on. Although, honestly, I'm speaking primarily of tortoises. Turtles are pretty much aquatic.
