Yes, I’m sure your language skills get better when you get drunk. I think the ladies will find you more attractive as well. Your IQ will go up 10 points per drink after 5 drinks. And when you start singing, Mein Hut, Es Hat Drei Ecken, you will know you have reached the pinnacle of your intelligence for that evening. Wow, I wish I was 16 again!

I have lived in Germany for some while, but by now my German has become pretty rusty.

On my next trip to Germany I'll try getting drunk and then I'll write to you in German. If you can understand it, it worked :)

Most multi-lingual people will admit that their second and third languages improve in both fluency and accent when they're a little tipsy--but not falling down stupid drunk. (One beer for me.) Alcohol lowers your reasoning power, so it shuts up that little voice that keeps trying to edit, or tell you that you don't know what you're doing, and you just talk. Accents improve as well. In language teaching that is called 'lowering the affective filter', the emotional bar to speaking another language. I'm not recommending 16 year olds get drunk, but being honest with you about my experience, and those of fellow language teachers.

You just THINK it improves when you're drunk. It doesn't. And this isn't as funny as you think it is either.
