The reason it's called a boxing ring is originally when they first started the contest it was just a group of people forming a ring surrounding the fighters but after a while they soon realised that the people surrounding the fighters were getting too involved so they decided to put a barrier around the fighters and to erect the barrier they had to have at least four stakes to hold the barriers up around the fighters hence the ring was turned into a square.

They get the term boxing ring from married couples who finally get divorced. after the ring there is a whole lot of boxing.
