They don't. The needles are ALREADY sterilized....

Needles are not sterilized, prior to a lethal injection. Needles are packaged and sterilized at the point of manufacture.
And there on locks on stores that are open 24 hours a day for security reasons. 7-11 lock their doors after 11pm in my area, and only let people in if they feel comfortable to do so.

I don't know the real reason, but some possible guesses:

1) They come ready sterlised from the factory

2) in case the person sticking the needle in accidently jabs themselves instead of the person their mean't to be sticking it in

3) in case the execution gets called off at the very, very last possible minute.

because we as a society are hypocrites and if we didn't sterilize them then someone would be all "cruel and unusual punishment" because it could be the beginnings of sceptcimiea....or something...either kill'em good or don't bother!
