I think if you like him go for it, but if your sure that you don't like him in that way the worst thing you can do is date him. its a fine line and you have to be careful, because if it goes bad you may lose your best friend.

If you're referring to him as a "fat guy", you should ask yourself if you are suitable to be his best friend.
If you are considering going out with him out of pity, DON'T, that will only hurt him more in the future.
If he is a great guy, and you like him, but worry about what people will think or say, GROW UP! And learn to think for yourself.
It just all depends on your feelings for him, and what your intentions are.

I had a best friend that was over weight that I knew liked me and sometimes I think I would lead him on just because I liked the attention, but in the end it was really just messing with his head and confusing him. I ended up hurting him even more.
So unless you think you really like him you'll just break his heart if you lead him on or date him out of sympathy.

I'd say go for it as long as you are willing to give up the friendship should things not work out. If you dont find him attractive at all then you cant just settle because the relationship is bound to fail someday. Its much easier to let him down now than break his heart down the road. Just tell him "your not my type and I value our friendship to much to complicate things."

It may be mean to say no, but it's even meaner to say yes if you don't mean it. You're just giving him false hopes when he doesn't have any, and setting him up to be hurt even more. If you aren't interested, then the nicest thing you can do is be honest with him. Just be nice about it.

there is no shame to it at all .. my best friend (girl) is fat and i have no problem in going out with her or be seen with her ... a person is judged by their heart not appearance
