The San Rafael Guide Dogs for the Blind Foundation, trains Labradors for guide dogs.. I have had two of those dogs, and they were super brains!
A *well bred* Labrador is extremely intelligent..

the important thing would be to meet both of the parents..and make sure that they are exactly as the dog you will want..

Labradors are no kind of stupid. They were used years ago as seeing eye dogs. Whoever told you they were stupid is stupid! They are one of the most intelligent breeds of dog ever. They are really though outdoor dogs in that they love the water and fields. They are like people only with a fur coat and four legs. Smart and loving as all get out...

Labs are anything execept stupid.
I have a black lab, and I taught her sit, and Give me howdey also known as Shake in less than a month.
Labs are in the top ten most intelligent dogs ranking I think 2nd which is good if you think about all the dogs in the world.
They are also the most poupler AKC reg. dog in the world.
They are not dumb, trust me when I say this.
Labs are wonderful dogs and you should try it out, if they are not for you then give it away to a close friend or someone , NOT a shelter.
Good Luck!

They are smart, very willing to please, but can have a lot of energy. It's most likely that those dumb examples of the breed were owned by people who didn't do much obedience training. They have a lot of energy and want to do something with it. If they have an outlet, they learn very quickly and do a lot of amazing things. If they are ignored or don't get enough exercise, they will tear things up and act like a hyper little 7 year old kid.

Labs are one of the top 10 most intelligent dogs. They will go through "teenage" years. I guess you could say they are as "stupid" as most teenagers during that time. I would recommend a good puppy class for when young and then a good basic obedience for when they are going through this stage. You have to understand - intelligent dogs think for themselves and have a tendency to question why they have to do things.

You get out what you put in. If you want a good dog you put in the time to make it a good dog. Some learn easy some take time. Our lab is a great house dog on top of being a great hunting dog.

They are very smart but sometimes not the most practical house dog.
They are bred to hunt and are very adaptable in the field or in the water and they LOVE to hunt. But in the house they can be clumsey and do strange things. My friends lab spills the water dish just to roll in it in the house.
No dumb but strange.
They are wonderful dogs and all dogs go through a "teenage" time where it seems they have forgotten everything you ever taught them but it all comes back.

I'll put it to you "this" way. Just about any dog is as smart as you treat them. When my dog was a year old, I tied a dish towel to the refridgerator door handle, put coke cans in cooley cups & put them in the fridg. Then it took 20 minutes to teach my dog to pull on the dish towel to open the fridge door, get a soda out, and bring it to me. "Then"
I told her, "well? aren't you going to close the door? She
went to the fridge door & pushed it shut with her nose!
At 4 months old, she was bringing me my shoes so I could take her outside to go potty. When I'm holding her treats, I tell her, "you have to tell me quietly & lick your lips....she does just that! My dog is a Labrador, who is now 4 years old......No, they are not stupid. Good luck.
