I'm not Muslim, but in the Mormon church we fast (24 hours no food or drink) once per month, if health allows, and you're over age 8. My health does not permit me to fast right now. However, on that day I do try to keep in mind that God loves me, and wants me to return to Him. I try to think of ways to improve my relationship with Him, and generally try to buoy myself up for the upcoming week, seeking strength and spiritual nurishment from Him. I also try to look back over the past month and see ways that I can improve myself, and in situations that have drawn me away from God I try to repent. I don't know if y'all believe in repentance, but maybe you believe in trying to "get right with God".
How about fasting for others too. I think y'all call them Imam's, anyway, I regularly pray for my church leaders, perhaps praying for those who have callings (?) within your Mosque will help them be better leaders. Of course fasting for your household and family is always a nice way to draw closer to them.
And generally speaking, how about fasting that people think before they speak? It seems a lot of the worlds current problems (including what the Catholic Pope recently said, and the problems that has caused) could have been lessened or avoided just by people thinking about the consequences of what they say, and how it could be considered insulting by other people.

I wish you well, and hope your season of fasting and drawing nearer to God is peaceful and bears good fruit for you and yours.

Ramadan Mubarak.

ideas to fast? well keep remembering Allah SWT and how happy HE will be when you strive to do your best.

always remember that those who fasted in this lifetime shall eat from a table in jannah/paradise when others will be asked why they didn't fast. those people will remain hungry as they are being judged.

then finally, it cleanses the soul, mind and body. as it brings you closer to Allah SWT. the angels love those who fast and they remain with him until he breaks his fast at sunset.
