As in, not gritting them because they are mad or don't like animals....they grind their teeth together.

HA! That's great. I thought I was the only one who did that. I know you don't mean grit like grind them. More like clenching your jaw.
I really have no idea why I did that. I was able to train myself not to though. Maybe it harkens back to having a fear of animals when I was younger so petting a dog or cat or horse (that was always a bit intimidating) had an element of fear. I was bit a couple of times and cats used the scratch the crap out of me.
However I was convinced that animals could tell I was tensing some part of my body when I petted them and didn't want them to feel that energy from me so I still, to this day, have to think "relax" as I pet the animal.

I have no earthly idea what you're talking about... maybe some people do, but I don't nor have I ever encountered someone who does. On the contrary, petting dogs and cats is usually relaxing and beneficial to most people; that's why many retirement homes have pets.

I've never done this or really seen anyone else do this.. Usually the people are talking to the animals..

Not me , I love animals and can't get enough of them. Some people though just are not animal people.

they dont i. pet animals all the time and i have never done it and i have a big family and they pet animals a lot too and i have never seen anyone do it in my intire life

i do that sometimes.......i just love my shih tzus sooooooooooooooo much, when i hug them, i grind my teeth because it's either that or squeeze 'em til their lil eyes bug out. i love my 'doggers'!!!!!!
