nothing special happened at the date because i didn't want to, he's very nice and i'd like to have him as a friend but maybe he'll think that's playing with his feelings

You want him as a friend? That's great - but don't tell him via e-mail. Tell him face to face.

If you go out again, make sure you make it clear up front that you're going out "as friends". If you make it all clear up front, then he knows what the deal is, so "playing with his feelings" won't be an issue.

If you are honest about your reason for contact and your intentions, then he'll have no reason to think you are "playing" with his feelings. Just be clear.
