Sounds like he wants to be in the house with you. If it's only happening at night it's probably not a physical problem. Well, maybe I take that back. It it's dark out and he's alone does he always howl, whether it's 9 pm or 4 am? Maybe he is experiencing some blindness and is howling/barking to keep away potential predators that he can't see.
See if he does the same thing if you keep him inside for the night.
You could also try giving him a nice long walk and decent exercise right before ti's bed time. He'll be too tired to howl.

Dogs are by nature pack animals. He is probably upset at being left alone outside all night long. Is he always kept outside?? Dogs need social interaction. They need to be part of a group, a family. Your dog needs to know that he is not being abandoned. Can you bring him in??? If he could have a special place to sleep, a room in the house, or a crate in your room, and be within the family "compound" he would be a lot happier.
Also, do you live where it gets cold at night? Are there other animals (wild ones) in the area? If you live in an area that has coyotes, cougars, bears, etc. , your dog could be sensing one in the area. He may be scared if it is a large predator. The best answer to your concern would be to bring your dog in at night.

Dogs are supposed to be pets, not lawn ornaments. Perhaps your dog realizes that its not right he is always stuck outside in the cold rain with other wild animals around him. Hes more then likely scared and wants to be in where he feels safe, with you. Im sure you mean well, but think how much you would like it if you were forced to spend your nights outside in the cold all alone in the dark ... Im sure you wouldnt like it anymore then he does. So either bring your poor dog in and treat it kindly or give it up to someone who will love your dog as if hes part of the family. Im sorry if this sounds rude but this poor dog deserves better.

H e just need syour attention. Mybe you should try bringing him inside more like at night. Maybe he would be happy just to be sleeping in th same room as someone. You could also try giving him a stuffed animal. That sometimes help. THe most that I can tell you is to spend more time with him. Hope this helps!

Your dog wants attention. Is he always outside? If he is then bring him inside and play with him. Dogs dont like to be left alone because it upsets them and they feel like they are not wanted and this can cause a change in their behaviour such as the howling you mentioned.

I think that the dog just wants to use the bathroom. The dogs cant go by themselves. they dont want to get in trouble so they howl and cry untill you take him/her out.
Or they want to sleep close to someone or something.

He's crying and howling because he doesn't want to be outside at night. He wants to be in the house where it's warm and he feels safe

Very simple answer......He's Lonely!!!!!
is there any way you could start bringing him in at night, dogs are like children they need to be reassured, maybe even in the late evening go out play with him, give him treats show some love.

Your dog is bored! He needs plenty of exercise and play time. Also he may need a companion. Dogs are pack animals and very social. having a single dog living alone outside is kind of boring for them. I try to have two dogs together, so they play and bond, ect. My dogs are all outside dogs, no need to bring them inside.
