FYI Current treatment for heartworm disease is not %100 safe. The common consequence after treating heartworm disease is a condition called pulmonary thromboembolism. This is a condition caused by the dead worms. The blood vessels can react to the dead worms floating within them thus causing clots to form. These clots along with the worms can cause blockage of the blood vessels within the heart ultimately leading to death. This can occur anywhere from a week to a month after treatment that is why exercise restriction is necessary for at least a month after treatment to help minimize this. As far as the prognosis for your dog it depends if your dog is showing signs of heart disease such as coughing, difficulty breathing, and exercise intolerance and is not treated he is most likely will die from heart disease. If your dog is not showing any signs of heart disease she has a better chance with no treatment but still would require heartworm preventative. But even with that there is still a risk that the disease could progress into heart failure regardless. Also another thing to note if your dog is showing severe signs of heart disease because of the heartworms the prognosis is poor whether she is treated or not.

WAIT - you DO NOT have to have her treated for heartworms!!!!!! There are other ways of helping her without the treatment that they use - I found out the hard way on a couple of strays that I adopted!

1) The treatment for heartworms involves strictnine or arsenic which stops the dog's heart from beating so that the worms will let go and be flushed out through the blood system. This is the HARSHEST way to help your dog - it causes arthritis, severe weight gain, the calcium is leached from their bones, etc.

2) a dog with heartworms CAN be treated with a monthly heartworm medication that will keep any new heartworms from forming and will kill all young heartworms. The older worms DIE OFF ON THEIR OWN without any harm to the dog.

My dog almost died twice due to the heartworm treatment and my vet at the time never told me that there was an alternative!!! The vet that I use now is great and gives me all of the information that I need - once a month treat your dog with a regular heartworm preventative and it will be fine.

Also, it's much less expensive this way.

The limping doesn't have anything to do with the heartworms by the way - could she have hurt her paw or leg recently?

Do a search online to find a cheap supplier of the heartworm preventative and get it soon if you can. Contact your local ASPCA or SPCA for a reduced or no cost clinic in your area as well.

Good luck.

If your dog is not treated there is a very high chance she will die. The mature heart worm grows up to 4 inches long and imbeds itself in the heart muscle and basicly strangles the tissue and the heart cannot pump blood in extream cases the heartworm can even grow in the brain and lungs. If your father refuses to get your dog treatment he could be charged with animal cruelty especially now that she is limping. You can call you local humane society and make an anonymous tip about your dad refusal have the dog treated. The only draw back would be if your father fails to comply with their orders they can take your dog away. He may also be given the choice to turn your dog over to them if he does not want to do anything for your dog.

If the dog has heartworms, she needs to be seen by a vet. If the vet thinks she is healthy enough, they can kill the heartworms. At least give your dog the chance of being seen by the vet and if heartworm treatment is out of the question, then have her euthanized(for her sake). Heartworm is treatable, but the longer you wait, the worse her chances. Good luck

You need to tell your Dad that the dog needs to go to the vet and get another shot to help her. You should ask him if he had a fatal disease wouldn't he want to get it treated. It is not that expensive. You just need to talk to him and let him know how much this dog means to you and that you really want to get her help. He should understand. If not you can go to the vet and get her help and they might eat the bill themselves if you let them know what is going on and your situation. OR they might be able to let you make payments. You just have to let them know what is going on. You might even contact your local animal shelter or humane society and they might be able to pitch in.

OH MY GOSH! Take her to the vet right now so they may help her live. If she does live ask your vet for tablets for heartworm and he'll give it to you.

If you get her to the vet and on meds, she will have a good chance. If not, she will suffer greatly and die!
