I don't believe in the 8 glasses one-size-fits-all answser. I tell my patients that they should be drinking 0.5 oz per pound each day. Easy calculation... take your weight and divide by 2 to get the number of ounces.

Caffeinated beverages don't count because they make you urinate out almost as much as you drank.

All of those were superb answers and they are all right... to an extent. I was always told that 8-8oz. glasses was plenty enough water for an average person a day. Now the odds change if you are a very athletic and active person I would assume your body needs a little more, how much, I do not know.

There is actually no exact amount, the reason being each person, based on their body size, type and activity levels should drink different amounts than others.

I try to drink at least 4 16.9 fl oz., or 1.05 PT or 500mL bottles of water per day. Sometimes I drink less and sometimes I drink twice as many. Just depends on the day.

Every day you lose water through your breath, perspiration, urine and bowel movements. For your body to function properly, you must replenish its water supply by consuming beverages and foods that contain water.

A couple of approaches attempt to approximate water needs for the average, healthy adult living in a temperate climate.

Replacement approach. The average urine output for adults is 1.5 liters a day. You lose close to an additional liter of water a day through breathing, sweating and bowel movements. Food usually accounts for 20 percent of your total fluid intake, so if you consume 2 liters of water or other beverages a day (a little more than 8 cups) along with your normal diet, you will typically replace the lost fluids.

Dietary recommendations. The Institute of Medicine advises that men consume roughly 3.0 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day and women consume 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.
