The distant ancestors of dogs would turn around several times in order to flatten long grass, etc., to form a bed, or as one respondent says above - a 'nest'. This ritual still lies in the 'tribal memory' of dogs. Incidentally, it is not necessarily three times - some dogs do more!

Actually there is no set number. Sometimes my dog will lay right down, others she looks like an airplane circling for a landing! The easiest way to explain this is that your dog is nesting. He/she is trying to make a "nest" where they are about to lay down - especially when it is on a bed or blankets.

I do this every night to check out my blankies. I have to check all around the edges to make sure there are no bugs or stuff..... yes, some of don't like bugs, contrary to popular opionion. I really hate spiders!

But normally its just nesting, the same way we fluff our pillows or straigten the sheets.

to make sure that hes beds just right .My dog does it to and its really cute.Its like a ritual .It has to be perfect and they always have a serouse look on there face to which makes it soooo cute

they just want to look around where they are sleeping making sure nothings wrong where they are sleeping at.
