Does anyone one else get annoyed at Catholics saying that other religions are ok and that they "respect" them. Isn't the point of Catholicism is that God and Jesus etc. exist and NOTHING else!?? (I'm a Catholic).

No. Although Catholics believe that we are following God's will and the teachings of Jesus Christ the best possible way, we do not say that this is the only way.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:

+ About Non-Catholic Christian Churches: Furthermore, many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside the visible confines of the Catholic Church: the written Word of God; the life of grace; faith, hope, and charity, with the other interior gifts of the Holy Spirit, as well as visible elements. Christ's Spirit uses these Churches and ecclesial communities as means of salvation, whose power derives from the fullness of grace and truth that Christ has entrusted to the Catholic Church. All these blessings come from Christ and lead to him.

+ About Judaism: "The Jewish faith, unlike other non-Christian religions, is already a response to God's revelation in the Old Covenant. To the Jews "belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ"; "for the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.

+ About Islam: The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day.

+ About other non-Christian religions: All nations form but one community. This is so because all stem from the one stock which God created to people the entire earth, and also because all share a common destiny, namely God. His providence, evident goodness, and saving designs extend to all against the day when the elect are gathered together in the holy city.

With love in Christ.

I see what you are saying, but in this day in age, we have to respect eachother. There is simply too much at hand to cause any conflicts because of religoin. Even if Catholics don't respect other religions, it would be smart to remain hush about it.

If the Cathlolics were start a religious war, it would cause mass chaos. Most people in the world are catholic- it would be them against everyone else. Look at the damage caused by one religous extremist group- al queda. Could you imagine if the entire catholic religion turned on everyone else? People get psycho when it comes to their religion.

Former Catholic here...I think that by "respect" they mean that they are tolerant of other religions, even if they don't believe in their teachings. Catholics tend to be tolerant of other Christian religions as well as Islam and Judaism. I don't have an issue with that. My issues are: lack of role for women, supposed infalibility of the pope in religious issues, Mary-adoration (I'm stopping short of saying Mary-worship out of respect for those that don't engage in it.), religious dogma w/no biblical basis (i.e, confession of sins to priest, celibacy of priests and nuns, baptism of babies, etc), lack of bible based teaching, and the list goes on.

That being said, every religion has some things about it we don't necessarily like. I think what's really important is that we ALL remember that Christianity, for both Catholics and Protestants, is religion of love. That includes loving neighbors with whom we don't always like or agree.

the point of Catholicism IS that of god and Jesus, yet just like Jesus and God, we respect other peoples religions, God doesn't force anyone, he loves us so much that he gave us free will.

While you've got a point (all Christian faiths believe they have the answer and that you should join them), they're just saying that you shouldn't go crazy on the other faiths. Realize that they have a right to their opinion and that they may be swayed by arguements, but not by coersion.

The place to find all the official Cathlic teachings is here:

http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/index.htm

Everybody else has opinions, which are simply their own thoughts, and mean little or nothing.

That is particularly applicable to many of the answers posted here, in response to your question.

No....what I get annoyed with is people trying to start religious "wars" in a forum like this.

I'm an atheist.....I live and believe in each person finding what works for them spiritually....and I totally respect their choice.

***this obviously does not pertain to today's terrorists....that's a whole other issue.

Actually Catholicism is akin to Agnosticism. God exists, but there is no way to know anything about him.
So they can not comment on the notions of any other opinions. They understand it is just that, an opinion. It's not truth.

Not believing as someone else does does not preclude respecting their beliefs, finding common ground, and celebrating the diversity of humanity.

You cannot have a dialogue with someone you don't understand, and you cannot spread the truth, however you view it, unless you have a dialogue.

I am Catholic and think my religion is the best or else I wouldn't follow it. I try to respect other people's religions apart from the one which is responsible for most of the world's ills and 99% of all terrorism.
