Typically spanking should only be used as a mild form of punishment. It is not actually supposed to hurt the child, but create some behaviour modification. With that said spanking can only be effective for kids up until the age of about 6

I got my last real spanking at 12 or 13 (over my mom's knee), but last year (16 yrs old) I made a smart *** comment and my mom swatted my butt once (clothed bottom with her hand and I was standing up). As for when is too old. Honestly it's when the parents feel that a spanking isn't effective anymore. If it is still effective past 13, I say spank them if need be. It may be a little embarrassment for the child, but he or she will learn that once they learn to stop doing that, they will stop being spanked for it.

Probably around 13. They will be entering the teenage years, If you continue to spank them, you will probably be doing that everyday and may cause them to rebel. Also by that age, if you have been spanking them all along, You should not have a reason to spank them in the future b/c if you did a good job parenting, the kids will know right from wrong.

I like BLESSED answer of when they leave your home. I have 4 boys (8, 14, 16, 18) I can not see myself spanking/beating the teens but I do punch them (anywhere but the face and penis area) when they have it coming. The 8 year still gets spankings/beatings as one form of punishment. To each his and her own. Spank that asssss!

It is a scientific fact that if a child is spanked even one time their potential for violence in life greatly increases.

Visit any prison and ask if any of them were spanked.

Don't spank your kids. There are better ways.

I don't think there is any particular age to stop spanking--it all depends on the child.

I think it is a bad idea to suddenly decide--say at age 12--to retire the paddle.

The way it works is-- it will just gradually become more infrequent and then disappear.
