There are loads of different types of Buddhists. Not all Buddhists make silk. Buddhists who have the right understanding of their religion won't kill anything, but many people don't have this understanding. Most of the people I know go to the temple as a social function and for no religious reasons at all, which defeats the purpose, but there will always be people like this, whatever the religion. A lot of people do not have the right practice simply because they don't have the right understanding. 98% of the Buddhists I know also eat meat, but my understanding of Buddhism is that eating an animal which has been killed to provide you with food is the same as killing animals........you haven't killed it, but someone has killed it for you.
At the end of the day, we are all human, and just because someone is Buddhist, it doesn't mean they are perfect, they will also understand things in their own way and this understanding could perfectly well be wrong.

With buddhists, they actually pray for all sufferings so that after re-incarnation, the spirit, in this example the silkworm, can come back to a better life. It is the spirit that matters and not the physical body. The silkworm has served its purpose in this life and is ready for its next lesson. It has given up life for a religious purpose and has already been connected with buddhism. The seed is planted but it will be up to the silkworm how long it will take to get to enlightenment.
Each life is an educational experience. It is an awakening process which will lead to enlightenment. The most important thing is the mind, the thoughts that were going inside the head before the action. It is this that defines karma that you cannot escape from.
Buddhists are still human beings living on this planet trying to reach enlightenment. Religion is only there to help, not a screen to hide actions from. It's very easy to target the religion, where it's the individual action that is up for debate. Which is the case for all religions. It's how people interpret the teachings.

Not sure what group of Buddhists manufacture silk and whether or not they heat the "grub" before it hatches... this method is the way that top-grade silk is made, that's true, but some low-grade silk is made from cocoons from which the adult moth has escaped.
In any event, the Buddha teaches us to work at lessening suffering. For some Buddhists this translates into killing no living being... or at least acting as though this were possible... but most of us view this as an impractical approach and get on with our lives with a full understanding that things must die for us to live... we just give credit to the things that die and thank them... difficult to explain.

First off, if you believe that Buddhists actually walk around without killing anything, that's a common myth. Anything you eat is usually made from killing something, whether it's from plant or animal. What you have to understand about Buddhists is the attitude toward what we eat. For instance, if I'm eating meat (and yes I do like meat), I thank the animal and the environment for providing that animal for sustenance. If I killed that animal just for the heck of it, or to waste most of it by only eating a certain amount, then that would be considered wrong thinking and wrong action. There is alot more to it, but unless you are willing to pursue the path to that knowledge, then my writing it all down for you would just cause you more suffering.

I love the reaction that this question has created, people in small numbers are so angyr about what is happening to our planet, but it never seems to spread to bigger ripples!
It is sad that some people who swear life is sacred, kill something to create something! But I am affraid that is the way of the world.
To survive is key, we have to kill a living aniumal to live, we will do it, we have to kill a living plant to survive, we will do it.
There is a film called 'alive', which shows how people with the will to live have eaten other people, very good film, but scary at the same time!
At the end of the day, we have to surive by any means, and we will, it is instinctual!

Um well, can't say I know the technicality or loophole that allows them to kill the silk worms...
Speaking of FOOLS, how do you intend to boil a cocoon without killing the silk worm inside? If they waited until it hatched they wouldn't have one long continuous thread.

Lucifer Sam 48 (above me) is pretty dumb!! - the cocoon CONTAINS the caterpillar (silk worm) and it MUST be killed to stop it detroying the cocoon when / if it emerged.
The silk filament is then unwound on one continuous length.
I suppose they do it because 'it's just a bug' - not a 'real' animal in their mind.
