Undocumented workers are so essential to the food industry nationwide that the National Restaurant Association has made stopping the Sensenbrenner-King bill its top priority in Congress this year.

'We are equal people'

"We value the work done by our employees, documented or not," said John Gay, the group's chief of government affairs and public policy in Washington.

"It's not like they broke into the bank to rob it," said Gay. "They broke into the bank to sweep the floor."

The Sensenbrenner-King bill would increase fines against employers who hire illegal workers, in some cases by tens of thousands of dollars per violation. It would also classify as "alien smugglers" the groups - including employers, churches and charities - that knowingly and "with reckless disregard" hire or help the immigrants. Migrants would be subject to criminal prosecution.

The restaurant association and most immigrant advocates back alternative legislation, drafted by Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) and Sen. Edward Kennedy (D., Mass.), that ultimately would allow undocumented immigrants to become legal residents.

Wow, all these people for other countries coming over here?? It like we put out a sign saying, "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" Oh that's right, we did!!! On the Statue of Liberty.
Am I upset? No way. People, please, we do knowingly hire illegal immigrants. We hire them to do all the 'dirty' work us lazy Americans wouldn't be caught dead doing. They have such work ethic they sometimes have 2 full time jobs with different names and SSNs. Sometimes, they work both jobs at the same place. I know of a few instances of this. The same guy Javier/Miguel works as a cook at a local restaurant.

a. Let the residents of the projects and teenagers fill those jobs.
b. When I was in a restaurant in Arizona, I saw a Mexican busboy that didn't speak English (and I am about 98% sure he was an illegal immigrant) pick his nose and eat the snot right before he touched a clean plate that he put on another table. Ever since then, I NEVER eat a restaurant unless I can see the food being cooked and served. (The only exception to this being a restaurant owned by some friends of our family. We know they aren't pigs.)
c. Large companies are just upset that they have to start living by the law. Naturally they are going to defend the illegals- they themselves were doing something illegal, and are now going to get “busted” for it.

The Sensenbrenner bill is pure horsecrap.

Too many people ignored the problem for too long until it got too big to resolve with garbage legislation or ignorant platitudes like "Illegal is illegal".

Like it or not, the USA *needs* illegals in order to maintain its current level of service and standards. If all illegals were deported, vital industries would be devastated. But the average sound bite believing fool can't wrap his head around this fact. He thinks illegals are draining our welfare system. They're not. Way more LEGAL blacks and hispanics under the poverty line are doing that. Most illegals take great pains to keep the US government from knowing they exist, so they DO NOT abuse the welfare system. That's just another lie the soft-heads fell for.

Why would anyone think that a person that could care less about our national laws would some how care about county food handling regulations? In Arizona the largest percentage of restaurants that are fined or being closed due to health code violations are mexican food restaurants. I do not want my food prepared by a person who is reckless in regard to sanitation laws. the same reasoning applies to a person who would be willing to falsify a work permit would also be willing to falsify a document showing that they are familiar with county health codes. The question is....Are you willing to take the risk?

Those restaurant owners will change their tune (and choice on voting) when TB is traced back to one of those illegal invaders who were NOT medically screened on entry into the USA as LEGAL immigrants are. Many illegal immigrants have highly contagious diseases!! They are walking, talking WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION!!!!!!!!!

"Today, legal immigrants must demonstrate that they are free of communicable diseases and drug addiction to qualify for lawful permanent residency Green Cards.

But Illegal Aliens stop at no medical checkpoint. Whoever walks through our foolishly open Golden Door comes in healthy or sick."

We give amnesty every few years and it just encourages more illegal immigration. All these immigrants are not the same. A large portion do not pay taxes, take advantage of our social programs, get free hospitalization. I even know of 2 men who opened 2 businesses, declared bankruptcy, and admitted they did not have valid SS#. Fortunately, they were taken away by a U.S. Marshall, leaving 1000's of dollars in unpaid debts. I know of another who came and started a very successful house painting business. All under the table and no taxes. He makes 5 figures and his wife gambles it away. We paid for prenatal care, delivery, and WIC for both of their children. I do not turn him in because he is my friends brother.

Yes, illegal hands do cook our food. That is one of the reasons that America is such a "messed up" country. We make rules and then change them, because of the essential needs of our country.

Without immigrants (illegal or not), this country would not be the way it is. They are so desperate to earn money that they give up their human dignity to do the dirty jobs, just for a few dollars. That is way wrong! The American government should be working to change THAT, not on how to make money through fining employers.
