I open my hand and touch my brow, and say,
"In the name of the Father"
Then I touch my heart with my hand, and say,
"and of the Son."
I touch my shoulders left and right, and say,
"and of the Holy Spirit"
I say,
"Amen."

Actually, i just learned this last night at a Bible study. The cross sign is not Biblical, the practice started after Constantine legalized Christianity and elevated the Church to a place of authority in 312 AD. It was during the next 300 years that certain doctrines, such as purgatory, praying to the saints, and worshiping Mary (none of which are Biblical) were started.

Actually, the original symbol of the church was the fish. Norsemen converting to Christianity used their own symbol, a hammer of Thor, and adapted it as the cross Jesus was cruxified on (the pope in Rome later made the Cruxifix the official version). The Orthodox church has their own stylized version, but I doubt there is any "official" form for them.

I think if Jesus( peace be upon him) was truely crucified ,then Christians should not consecrate the cross because it reminds them with the tool of toturing their prophet. It is the invention of the wife of a roman ruller who sought for the cross which Christians believed Jesus was crucified on after too many years (I ca'nt remember exactly) and she took it as a sacred cross.

No it was not the bible. The cross was the apparatus that the Romans used for execution. This is where Christ was executed and therefore became the symbol of the church because the death that it brought did not limit Christ's life thus become the symbol of life.

Not a scripturally based doctrine, but probably manifested by a desire to revere Jesus.
