Hello,

I have a 93 Jetta, and while in reverse it makes clunking sounds. The faster I reverse, the quicker the pace of the sound becomes. However it never makes this sound while in any other gear. I assume this is a transmission problem. If so, does the whole transmission need to be replaced, or just a portion? Any replies would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Wendy

The thing I would do is pull out the transmission and pop off the cover. But if you dont have the time, just take it to your local mechanic. It could be one of the CV axles, wheel bearrings, transmission bearrings or gears, Or the tranny fluid(possibly). It is, though, most likely the tranny. Wheel bearrings around $10-$20. New CV axles around $20-$50. tranny around $100-$500 used. Good luck!

You have a tooth either damaged or missing off the reverse idler. The transmission will have to be removed and disassembled for inspection and repair. Do it very soon as other damage can result if the broken piece gets into the differential.

1. Reverse uses a different type of gear than all the rest, which makes it sound different, and feel different. It uses striaght teeth to catch, and are often wore out a lot quicker than the other gears.

Check that out first because that is most likely the problem.

It might be the tranny, or it might be something like a bad U-joint on the drive shaft. I'd take it to a mechanic to have the rear end, transmission, drive shaft, and U-Joints checked out. Hope this info helped.
