My housemate has two Tibetan spaniels, ages 4 and 5. We need tips on training them NOT to pee in the house! They used to be toilet trained, but following a marriage break-up and a couple of house moves (they're dogs from a broken home) - their standards seem to have slipped somewhat.
We're both out at work during the day and the dogs stay in the kitchen then - by the time we get home we're usually met by several puddles! The dogs are let out in the morning by whoever leaves for work the latest, then again by whoever gets home the soonest.
I'm a cat person so have no idea where to start here! Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone for the training ideas - and those of you saying the dogs should not be left try stopping to think for a second before being all sanctimonious. When my friend got the dogs she was home all day as her husband earned enough to support them both. Now she's single she has to work to live - it's a fact of life. The rent won't pay itself. The dogs are well cared for and happy, she is in no way a bad pet owner as certain people seem to be implying. We're thinking of trying paper training as opposed to crate training so at least the puddles will be confined to one area and easy to clean up - we think it would be unfair on the boys to keep them confined to a crate while we're out.

Following on from what John l said which I agree with it will probably just take some time too. If they have been through a bit of a trauma and are having to get used to a new home then once they feel settled and completely at home they will fall into line with your routine alot better because they will see you as their owners and friends and will want to please you.

Try going for a pee in the morning before you go to work, and then not going again until you get home! Bet you would leave puddles too. It is simply not fair to expect these babes to hold on all day long without going to the toilet. Either find them a home with someone who can give them the time and attention they need, or simply put paper down and live with the puddles. Tibetan spaniels are clean little dogs, I keep them but I would not force any of my dogs to hold on for over 9 hours. It will cause emotional problems and possible kidney damage too if they had to be forced to hold on for so long. Why oh why do people have dogs they have not got the time to care for properly?

A well-trained dog makes everyone happy, including his owner. Take a little time training him, and you'll never regret it; you'll always have an obedient dog by your side. Find more https://tr.im/Dfcir
By their nature, dogs are pack animals with a well-defined social order. Through basic training, you need to consistently make sure your puppy understands that you are the leader, not him. So in teaching him the basic rules, you take on the role of pack leader.
To fit into the family circle, your dog must be taught to recognize his name and such commands as come, heel, lie down and sit.

Although you feel a crate would be mean, a crate is actually a great place for them to develope a sense of security. Also, while in the crate, if it is the right size for your dog, the dog will not potty in their space. They don't want to sit or lie in it. I had an older dog of 10 years old with the same issue, he was outside all the time, then we brought him in to be a house dog. However the messes got to be a bit much. Once we got the crate or his "House" as we call it, he immediately stopped messing in the house and holds it until we get home.

There are training pads that you can buy from pet stores that are disposable, and they supposedly have a scent put in them to attract the dog. Sometimes you can find them at a grocery store in the pet section. The dog will tend to use the restroom on them if you place them in an area were the dog usually does it's business. Not very expensive, and worth a try for sure.

The kitchen is too big of an area. Get two crates for the dogs. They should only be big enough to stand, turn around, and lay down in. Keep the dogs in the crates while no one is home. They won't mess where they have to lay down. You train adults just like you crate train puppies. It won't be long before they see your home as their den and start to hold it all day.

The real problem is that the dogs need to be walked during the daytime. They are simply left too long without getting out. Either someone needs to come home at lunchtime and take them out or you need a dog walker.

dont worry we use to leave are dog and have the same problem. you cant stop a dog from going to the loo so all you can do is if they need to go keep it to one area maby near the back door so some smell can escape. we used this spray which attracts the dog and makes it go the loo so if it needs to go when no ones there it will go in the same place so you don't have to clean the whole kitchen. you can buy it from any pet stores . hope i helped.
