I have found that green bananas may still look a little green after you have purchased them, but look for the tiniest little spots on them. They may actually be more ripe inside then they look on the outside.
I keep my bananas on the shelf in open air and normally not in the fridge. I have found that keeping bananas in the fridge only gives you - perhaps, twelve to twentyfour extra hours before they get too ripe.

Ideally
BUY
your bananas green ( they will ripen in a day or two )
and a few yellow ( but not spotty )
bananas should be hung upon a hook ,
with air circulating around them,
if you keep with other fruit , they will go rotten faster
They do not do so well in a fridge ,
they can develop" frost bite ",( hard unpleasant lumps) .
Bananas do not freeze either .

I don't know about keeping them in the frige, but I have a "banana hanger" on my kitchen counter and just hang them there.
That's why I always limit my banana purchases, because they will grow old really soon, but I do suggest that you keep them at room temperature.

If you cannot keep them in the refrigerator then I suggest buying smaller bananas that aren't strong enough to open the door;=) Some of the more feisty ones are too much trouble anyway, just let them go free!!

keep them under your bed
keep them in the attic
keep them in a shoebox
keep them in the fridge
keep them in the oven, just don't turn it on
they're bananas, not fish. they take about half a week for the dark spots to appear, after that they just keep getting mushier and mushier.
common sense should prevail in all cases, green bananas can be bought, but they last longer but can't be eaten in their green state. they are full of sap and are just plain nasty.
keep them anywhere that suits you. just not in a really hot place, because you will get black bananas.
my grandfather used to BBQ bananas in their skins. like mushy banana that tastes like a jar of heinz baby food, this is the way to go.

As the Chiquita Banana song says, "Bananas like the climate of the very, very tropical equator - So you should never put bananas in the refrigerator."

Here's the trick. Break apart sets of bananas and get varying ripeness. That way they don't all get ripe at once.

I keep mine on the kitchen table. Sometimes i put one in the freezer and wait till it freezes. It makes a nice frozen treat! Kids love it also.
