Sounds like a TMJ (tempomandibular joint) issue. Sometimes this is caused by involuntary grinding of your teeth when you are asleep or it could be caused by any number of things. You were right on the ball thinking it was a joint problem. I suggest you call your dentist and have him/her evaluate the problem. Sometimes there is a simple solution such as you using a biteplate when you sleep and when you're not at work or school or wherever to keep the joint in place. Unfortunately, in some cases surgery may be needed to correct the problem. But have no fear. Go to your dentist andlet him/her check it out and see what they have in the way of suggestions for help with this issue. Good luck

Yes, It is a tmj problem. Mine started when I was 16. I guess I should have listened to them when they said my bite was off and braces would help.
Anyway, I am now 52 and have tried night guards without success. Surgery is always an option, but it is not a good option, according to folks who have ahd it.
Some folks say an osteopathic physician can help , doing craniosacral work, some say chiropractic.
I have had NO luck with any of them..but I wish you luck!

This could be an outward sign of oncoming TMJ.
Tell your dentist about it and ask for advice.
My ex ended up with her mouth stuck wide open one christmas morning needing ER intervention because she ignored an issue like the one you describe.

My boyfriend's jaw does that, but he doesn't seem to have any health problem related to it. It's just a little annoying sometimes.

It's TMJ (Tempromandibular Jaw ). Your teeth alignment is off, and your dentist can fix it or send you to someone who can.
