I have a condition called Hidradenitis suppurativa. It is NOT caused by uncleanliness or being over weight or all the other things you may hear.

According to my dermatologist, some people are "carriers" of staph which causes the boil - and can be very painful. Ask your dermatologist about a low dose minocycline (antibiotic) long term. I have been on 100 mg for almost a year and have not had any more problems. I am not over weight and I am very clean.

"Boils are generally caused by an infection of the hair follicles by Staphylococcus aureus or staph, a strain of bacteria that normally live on the skin surface. It is thought that a tiny cut of the skin allows this bacterium to enter the follicles and cause an infection. This can happen during bathing while using a razor.

People with immune system disorders, diabetes, poor hygiene or malnutrition (Vitamin A or E deficiency) are particularly susceptible to getting boils. However they may also occur in healthy, hygienic individuals.

Hidradenitis suppurativa causes frequent boils."

My husband suffers from them. He has high blood pressure, high insulin, and other problems that may be a result of the high insulin. He also has a gluten and dairy (lactose) intolerance. Gluten intolerance is also known as celiac or sprue disease. He has been eating more yogurt recently, and I believe it is helping his skin condition.

I don't know for certain, but if boils are like acne, then the yogurt, which contains acidophilous, which is good against the candida (yeast) fungus, may be why he is having less skin problems.

www.hufa.org has some basic information regarding the candida fungus.

I am 28 and have had them since I was 13.

Check out the website..it answered all my questions that I had for years. I cried the day I found out there was someone else, like me, out there. You can also see pictures of other people's boils. They often occur in the areas with the most sweat...under the breasts...between the legs, under the arm, hips, and buttocks.
