I have been taking Protonix for about a week for an ulcer. These past two days I have gotten heartburn pretty bad, after eating food that is not a normal heartburn inducer...??
How long should it take to start working?

I would give it a few more days. I take Protonix and if I remember correctly it took at least a week. I would like to also suggest going to the chiropractor. I suffered with heartburn for 1 1/2 years and the Protonix and other drugs weren't working. They ran 5 different tests to see why I was having so much trouble ( heartburn 24/7 ) I went to the chiropractor for an adjustment and no longer have heartburn!

You're meant to give it a week to see signs of improvement but my little girl never really took to it. It didn't burn her throat like the Infant Gaviscon did, but it didn't do much to help either. We moved onto Losec after a few days on Zantac (called Ranitidine here in New Zealand). See how you go, but don't be afraid to go back to the Dr. if you feel you need to. I was told to give the Gaviscon for at least a week before changing but stopped after 3 feeds as it was obviously causing my baby pain she'd not had before. She's now been very happy on Losec for the past month or so :-)

Contact your doctor. I find that if I eat small amounts of food several times during the day I get less heartburn. Also, don't eat and lay down! I'm on Nexium and it has help be a lot. Still have problems if I don't follow my diet. Take care.

3-4 days. It should have started helping by now. You probably need an antibiotic along with the Protonix.
