The earlier the better!! I have worked in the dental field for over 20 years and I started bringing them into the dentists office with me, just to get aquainted with the place, from the time they were infants. Since I've worked in the dental field for over 20 years I had the opportunity working with dentists all the time to bring my kids in and introduce them to the world of dental health from a very young age. When my kids were about one year old I had them sit in the childrens dentist chair, have a bib put on them, check out the water sprayer, the chair, the suction instrument, the gloves, the gauze, the toothbrushes and the list goes on. I even had one of the doctors just come over and take a slightly moist 2X2 gauze and while my son was in the dental chair rub it gently over his gums and whatever teeth he had and then say "What a good boy! You just had the dentist clean your teeth! Now you can get a balloon from the front desk. We're all so proud of you." I did the same with daughter. My kids pretty much grew up in comfortable contact with the whole concept of dental hygiene and going to the dentist for cleanings. When it came time for my son to have some extractions done in conjunction with his getting braces, the experience was most likely a million times better than it could have been because I had brought my kids up being comfortable being at the dentist. Plus, they learned to trust the dentist and the hygienist and listen to them when it came to taking care of their teeth. So I guess what I'm trying to say is early and frequent visits, even if only to visit and say hi, to your dentist and dental hygienist is the way to go. Medically speaking, if your child isn't having any specific problems than a check-up at about age 2 is a good start. I hope I was helpful. Let me just put it this way.......my children have NEVER screamed and yelled and thrown a hissy fit at the dentist, or the doctor for that matter (I think I'm just lucky on that one......although they did cry when they got shots) and I hope that has something to do with my early job of familiarizing them with the whole "Dentist Office Visit" concept.

I'm a dentist.

Some of my colleagues would go so far as to say that children should be seen before the six month mark. That's ridiculous.

I'd probably wait until 18 months or so for the first visit. Obviously, there's virtually nothing we'd do, but it is a good idea to have us look just to make sure everything's developing normally.

When my daughter was young the experts were saying two years. Now it may be completely different. Call your dentist or a pediatric dentist and ask them.

take them at 1 for a check up to make sure the teeth are coming in straight, then at 2 for cleaning, 3 and up take them 2x a year like all others should do.

I say when they get their two teeth to get them looked at and then when they get them all in for a cleaning. Wait a year after first cleaning and then every six months.

Hope this helps.
