Because dogs are poop eaters...seriously! You can go to the Pet Store and purchase some "FOR-BID" or "DETER"....it will help them to stop. My Pit did the same thing and the Deter stopped her.

Sometimes it's because there is still some leftover food in there that wasn't digested. Ex. carrots, corn, etc. My dog gets carrots everyday, and it comes out with carrot bits. Sometimes she can't help herself. Clean up the poop quicker and it's no problem!
Otherwise you have to catch her in the act of trying to eat the poop and discipline her VERBALLY ONLY harshly. Yelling NO!!!! When she stops and looks at you, like huh? then you PRAISE HER LOTS. Good Dog!!! Good Dog. The eating will be associated with the correction, and the not eating will be associated with praise. Dogs want to please their masters. Never ever hit a dog.

it is probably a nutritional deficiency, are you feeding high quality food or what you find at wal-mart? if its the supermarket brands then he may not be able to digest it properly, and therefore there is still some much needed nutrition in his feces. or could be bored. Where did you get him? if it was from a pet store who gets they're pups from puppy mills then he might have had to live in his own filth as a young pup and now doesn't care

Lots of dogs eat other animals fecies, that's normal for them to do this, they are actually getting vitimins and minerals from this even as gross as it sounds!

Because dogs are just like that. They also will return to their own vomit and eat it. Disgusting but true.
