I use AVG and wouldn't trade it for a NEW anything..
Millburn, N.J. – June 19, 2006 – GRISOFT, the maker of award-winning AVG Anti-Virus, today announced the release of ewido anti-spyware 4.0, which provides comprehensive protection against a wide array of security threats. This new version is the only anti-spyware software to include a powerful combination of advanced security features such as generic unpacking of compressed malware, true memory scanning, heuristics, and use of binary signatures for the most thorough analysis of programs that place users’ computers at risk.
Additionally, the new release provides extended analysis tools that allow users to manually inspect their computers for suspicious activities by tracking running processes, start-up entries, current Internet connections, and detection of browser plug-ins. It also supports Fast User Switching - a feature of Windows XP – that allows several users to be simultaneously logged onto a workstation without compromising security.
GRISOFT products now go beyond AVG antivirus and firewall to provide comprehensive malware protection against rapidly growing threats like spyware, adware, dialers, keyloggers, trojans and worms.
“Version 4.0 is one of the most advanced anti-spyware programs available today,” said Marketing Manager for WE Andreas Rudyk. “Its unique combination of the most advanced malware detection and user friendly features demonstrates our commitment to continuously develop and improve protection for our customers.”

AVG loose is in all probability between the main depended on loose antiviruses. the impressive between the 12 months ameliorations each and every 12 months. different sturdy ones are: Panda Cloud Antivirus Avast loose Avira loose Microsoft protection necessities no longer in any specific order. To be truthful loose protection is extra constructive than no longer something, even though it nevertheless sucks. you are able to supplement despite loose antivirus you %. with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Threatfire besides simply by fact the Comodo Firewall.

Anything is better than Norton, it's like having a big fat virus on your computer.
The others already pointed out some good antivirus such is avast, bitdefender, etc.
Also stay away from Microsoft's anti-malware tools. They are both too intrusive and ignore Microsoft's own hidden activities on your PC, like phoning home.

Do a search for trend micro free online virus scan. It's free and easy to use. No sign ups or sign ins, and it's pretty fast if you have high speed internet. I wouldn't use it if you have dial up though.
